This week is the BC Bike Race and local mountain biker, and rising star, Manuel Prado is their again to win. At this time his team is in 4th overall but I would not rule Manny out yet as he has the ability to take it to the next level and put the hurt on the field.

On Sunday I cruised up to the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix. I had never been to a pro road race, I took as many photo’s as I could. Rashaan Bahati took from Rock Racing took the pro race. He was flying down the final straight way lookin super mean!
The highlight for me was hanging with Sellers at the Motor Tabs booth and taking to people about his incredible product. The Fluid Recovery booth had lot’s of action also. I love how both of these brands support local cycling!

The race report below if from Travis Wilkerson of Team Sho-Air/Sonance Elite Cycling. Who better to give a report than a guy that was in the race. These dudes showed up big time and were working hard. So fun to see them race as strong as they did.
———————————————————-
This weekend was the infamous Manhattan Beach GP. Always a favorite race of SoCal riders, it is an event everyone wants to win. MBGP is an NRC, and therefore the Elite Team was split up. At NRC races, the pro-1’s race by themselves, giving the cat.2’s their own race as well. We lined up a solid squad for the cat.2 race, and as the prime bell started ringing we started taking laps. There were about 10 primes in all given out in our 60 minute scramble, and we got 5 of them. The last 3 laps, as usual at MB, got a little crazy.
Lots of people bumping and throwing shoulders. At the start of the last lap I had Charon’s wheel and as we hit the hill, we got boxed in. I was yelling at Charon to get us out, and just then, in the turn at the top, some idiot crashed. Sweet, we had our way out. Just then Brian and George came up the left and gave us a free ride to the front. I slotted in about 7th spot as we headed into the bottom turn. Charon was a rider or two behind me, when an over zealous racer decided he could hold 34mph through the outside of that turn. He was wrong in thinking that. He was next to me about a half bike length up and to my left when he hit the deck, almost going under me as he did it. It caused me to tap brakes and loose about 10m to the front runners. I got around a few guys and got up into 6th place. Not the result we were looking for but not terrible either. MBGP is a tough race, and it’s any body’s race out of that last corner.
The pro-1 started right after with Tommy, Kirk, and MJ in there. It was another fast race, and with last year’s winner, Bahati, out there looking to repeat, Rock Racing was going to keep it together. They did and Bahati won, but Tommy got in there and mixed it up at the NRC level coming in 15th place, and only the 3rd non-pro across the line. Kirk was not far behind in the mid-20’s.
SDG Saddles
As usual you will have to wait a few weeks for the full report. However, I have been riding on these saddles for the past 8 months and I finally found the one that fits my sit. I stopped riding body-geometry saddles to try something different, after I was having issues. It looks like there new saddle is going to be a gem in the Road and Mountain Bike worlds.
This saddle is great!
What Andy and I really need though is a couple of the SDG Mini Bikes to rip around his neighborhood on…
Today was an average Sunday like many others. Wake up early, after a long week of work and riding, to meet at 7:45am in the Tustin Marketplace for the locally famous group ride, “Como.” I don’t know why it is called this and don’t care, but I do know the ride has been happening for 17+ years and every Sunday it attracts at least 60 or more cyclist to race through the hills of Santiago/Irvine Canyon.
The ride is usually fast, painful, and always filled with riders one would not expect to see on their normal weekend ride. This past year I have ridden with 4x champion Brian Lopes, Rising MTB XC star Manuel Prado, and other various professional road racers, I have no clue who they are, other than they race for Jittery Joe’s and other teams.
Today’s ride was awesome! With perfect weather and a large group. I was looking through the crowd to see pro MTB rider Sid Taberlay. The Australian champion and olympic athlete has recently moved to the area and signed a contract to race with local Team Sho-Air.
Tasmanian Taberlay welcome to the neighborhood, even though I was flicked off the back of the front group like a wet booger as you pulled on the first climb!

UPDATE - Limestone Canyon and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, which has been closed since October’s Santiago Fire, is scheduled to reopen at 9 a.m. July 12. The arson blaze, which charred more than 28,000 acres, burned 90% of the park, one of Orange County’s most popular hiking and mountain biking spots. OC Parks staff and other crews have been hard at work over the past eight months to make the park safe for visitors and help the land recover. OC Parks staff, along with the Orange County Fire Authority and Orange County Conservation Corps, worked to regrade roads and trails, clear brush and fallen trees to ready the park for reopening.
I want one! After Christophe Sauser won the world championship last weekend on the new 2009 Specialized Epic, I had to find the pictures of it. The bike looks great and is lighter than the previous model.
Oh yea, it’s happened! You can now get Motor Tabs at Rock N Road in Mission Viejo. Get down to the MV store and pick up some Tabs to support both of our site sponsors.
Crystal from Rock N Road just sent this email around. If you’re a female interested in road riding this is the perfect ride to get your feet wet on.

Team High Road Will Ride in the 2008 Tour de France as “Team Columbia” Under New Sponsorship Agreement Supporting Columbia Sportswear Company’s Outdoor Brand Leadership.
GENEVA, Switzerland and SAN LUIS OBISPO, California – June 16, 2008 – Columbia Sportswear Company (Nasdaq: COLM), a global leader in the active outdoor apparel and footwear industries, and California-based High Road Sports, Inc., the owner of Team High Road, today announced a new team sponsorship agreement that prominently places the Columbia brand at the starting line of the 2008 Tour de France on July 5.
True or False? Standard pushing is for the pros. If you want to shape skiing or climbing, you have to ditch the job, move into the car and find a deep-pocketed sponsor. The tiny window afforded to weekend warriors couldn’t possibly be enough time with which to make an impact. Right?
Today, we bring you the Crusade, the story of two stockbrokers, an engineer and a nuclear physicist who, with a little help from the Internet, helped shaped American ski mountaineering without ever leaving their backyard. There will be no helicopters. No corporate expeditions. No photo shoots. Just a decade-long odyssey from the ambitious imagination of youth across the Cascades’ steepest faces all the way to the unsettled wisdom of adulthood. It turns out weekend warriors are just as capable.
There will be an an expanded photo and video version later this week so make sure you check out the site. I actually haven’t listened to this show yet. I can’t wait for the ride home!
Product for Review: Luna Sport Recovery Smoothie – dark chocolate
Alright, as the sole female product reviewer on this forum I gotta represent and do product reviews that work well for female athletes. This is a review on the Luna Sport smoothie recovery drink (dark chocolate) (it also comes in Strawberry/Banana but I have not tried that one yet). First, the taste factor because we all know we girls aren’t going to hit it if the chocolate tastes nasty … LUNA Recovery Drink Review

Way back when, Chad was on the US Postal Service cycling team. He showed a lot of potential, so he was invited to participate in a camp at an Olympic training facility. It was at this camp that he had a meeting with Armstrong that apparently changed his life forever.
Bobby Julich won’t be heading back to the Tour de France for another crack at the maillot jaune. The 36-year-old veteran ─ third overall in 1998 ─ was left off the nine-man, Tour-bound squad revealed Monday by Team CSC-Saxo Bank. “I think we could have taken two teams to the Tour de France, with so many good riders to choose from,” said team manager Bjarne Riis on the team’s Web page. “We have taken the nine sharpest riders and we hope we can meet our ambitions with them.”
I’m curious how Andy Schleck will do in his first tour.
Team CSC-Saxo Bank for 2008 Tour de France:
Fabian Cancellara (Swi)
Carlos Sastre (Spa)
Andy Schleck (Lux)
Fränk Schleck (Lux)
Nicki Sørensen (Den)
Jens Voigt (Ger)
Stuart O’Grady (Aus)
Kurt-Asle Arvesen (Nor)
Volodymir Gustov (Ukr)
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — There were 34 male competitors in the Hy-Vee Triathlon, a World Cup event that served as the final Olympic qualifying race for the United States. But as far as the former Olympians Hunter Kemper and Andy Potts were concerned, there were really only two. Battling for the last of three places on the team headed to Beijing, Kemper outran Potts in the 10-kilometer run, the race’s final leg, to make the Olympic team for the third time.
As I was typing in the upstairs office tonight with my shirt off I got pissed as I looked in the mirror! I’m back up 7 pounds since March 29. The real tipping point came on Saturday during my ride with Greg Sellers. Greg hooked me up with a Motor Tabs team jersey. I love the jersey but I have a nasty case of jersey gap when I wear it, uggh. It’s time to get serious about my weight again. I’m banking on Breakaway Training to get me back down to where I want to be. There’s something about Felipe’s plans that keep me motivated to train.
The plan is lot’s of riding and eating well plus documenting what I eat (food journal). The other essential part of the plan is to train well with the nutrition products I have access to. This will allow my training to be quality. Effective use of Bonk Breakers (pre), Motor Tabs (during) and Fluid Recovery (post) will provide the energy and recovery that’s necessary.
Lastly, I’ve chosen my next race, the Rim Nordic Cross Country #4, Aug. 17, 2008 in Lake Arrowhead, CA. I’ll race beginner and enjoy myself while watching Dave pound out 4 laps and attempting to kill his arch enemies.
Today I lived vicariously through my good buddy Derek Yankoff (not joking), as he competed in his first full Ironman. Derek completed Ironman Coeur d’Alene in 12:55:39. Ironman.com allows for “split time” athlete tracking throughout the day so I would hit refresh whenever I could make it back to my computer. The most impressive split of Derek’s day was his marathon time (4:46:41), unreal after a 112 mile bike ride!
If I’m honest there is a little bit of jealously that Derek was able to do it before I did and complete it in a time I could never dream of. Maybe I’m more competitive than I think I am…
Get some rest my friend and I’ll buy you lunch sometime this week when you get in town. I couldn’t be more proud of you!
TRENTINO, Italy — Todd Wells and Georgia Gould were the first two racers to clinch spots on the U.S. Olympic mountain biking team, after no Americans secured an automatic bid Sunday in the world championships.
It’s been a little while since a post on where things are at with me and training. So this is my narcissistic post of the week.
Quick update:
- Our next baby is due August 29. Getting super excited but know this will mean a significant change is free time.
- Haven’t run in over 80 days, the plantar fasciitis is still owning me.
- Canceled 3 triathlon that I had already paid for within the last 80 days.
- Cortisone shot in my foot on Tuesday of this week. Seems to be helping.
- Weighing in at 186 pounds but feel fatter than that. Lowest weight of the year was March 29 at 181.5 pounds.
- Traveled a bunch of days for work in April, May and June. This throws me off.
- Looking forward to the cyclocross season this fall.
- Rode my bike to work 4 of 5 days last week.
Within the last 2 weeks I’ve felt clarity on the direction I would like to go with training and racing. I think my days of triathlon are over and the different bikes will be the focus (mountain, road and cross). After my foot heals I may run for some cross training but don’t think triathlon will be the focus anytime soon.
From there I need to ask Felipe from Breakaway Training to restructure my training plan with ONLY riding in mind, no more swimming or running. The next step for me will be to pick a race, stick to the training plan and get my eating back in line.
Rode with Greg from Motor Tabs this morning for 2 hours and we talked about health and eating. Him and I are going to begin holding each other accountable with our eating habits and weight goals.
Overall this new thinking gets me super excited because I love being on the bike so much. Riding with the Como peeps tomorrow. I’m a gluten for getting dropped. I’m going to “ride” to the “ride” to save on gas.
