San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island 2008

During the 30 seconds of down time I had this weekend I stumbled across this race being put on by Tri-California Events. The San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island offers 2 different distances, a sprint and an International. Like I’ve said in the past, Tri-California put on the best races in the business.

As a bonus, the final stop on “The Haul to the Great Wall” Elite Series Championship will be at the San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island. Elite athletes from all over the world will be racing in San Francisco, competing for the Elite Series purse of $40,000.

Big Sur Half Marathon – 85% Full

Spots are filling up in Monterey for the sixth presentation of the Big Sur Half Marathon on November 9th 2008. As of today my wife and I are heading up on the 8th with 7 other racers and their families. It will be a blast. Join us.

Early this past week I found myself hammering out miles on a tread mill at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa. 6 miles in one room can seem like forever at race pace. Late in the week I was weaving along the Rio Grande finishing up my weekly mileage. I am determined to hold work at bay while I train for Big Sur.

Many thanks are due to Bosque Youth Conservation Corp who manage the Middle Rio Grande Ecosystem. While I was putting in the trial of miles early Friday morning I was grateful to each of you for your work on the Ecosystem. THANKS.

Focused on my cadence while riding the mountain bike and nearing the top of Palos Verdes back here in LA on Saturday morning James Reilly slowed as he was passing me to offer words of encouragement. Twenty minutes later I had invited him to Tinley’s Extreme Tri in early October and he had shared his knowledge of the trails around PV. Thanks James for sharing your passion about riding.

Rock N’ Road Cyclery Rocks

Many thanks to Matt F. and Tracie S. and Matt F. at Rock N’ Road Cyclery. The above pic shows me a few hours after my late evening purchase of a Specialized Epic. Matt went out of his way to make sure I had all the info I needed to make a good decision on my new bike. And when I got down to Mission Viejo Tracie was phenomenal. When it comes to bike shop staff I have super high standards. I spent time in high school working in one and a family friend managed another. Those two experiences have left me with high expectations for service and quality gear. When I showed up Tracie was super friendly, understanding and generous with her time. And the bike was ready to go as promised. Andy B. showed up shortly after with our new Outside All Day kit and I raced back to the South Bay to ride PV. The Epic is just that. Yesterday the mail came and with it a thank you letter from Tracie for making the drive down and choosing them to purchase a bike. Wow.

This weekend: Southern California Cyclocross Race #1

Southern California Prestige Series (SCPS) of Cyclocross Race #1 Starts this weekend…

The Race: The “Art of Cyclocross” Race #1
Where: Muckenthaler Cultural Center – Fullerton, CA
When: Sunday, September 21, 2008

Last year this race was a bunch of and I expect the same this year. Especially since the sport of cyclocross continues to grow. I keep hearing little buzzes within the cycling communities of mountain bike riders and road enthusiast who are going to keep their fitness up this winter by racing a little cross.
One person who I know for sure that is extra excited is our very own Andy B. I have constructed him a bike from left over parts and the man is taking to course for the first race Sunday morning.

Location/Directions: 1201 W. Malvern Avenue Fullerton, CA 92833. The center is located one block west of Euclid, two and a half miles north of the Riverside Freeway (#91).

Registration: Pre-register at www.sportsbaseonline.com. Prestige Series season discount passes available on line. Online registration closes Thursday Sept 18th at 9:00PM (Pacific).

Race day registration: Opens at 8:30am and closes 15 minutes before each race category start.

Juniors pay regular entry fee for category races if NOT entering Junior race. • Additional race entries are $5.00 per race after higher entry fee is paid. • The Non-Competitive Fun Race entry is $5.00 (FREE if additional race), and does not require a license. • $5.00 late fee for race day entries, or postmarks after Wednesday Sept 17th. A USA Cycling license is required for competitive categories and can be purchased at the race or online at: www.USACycling.org (annual license only). Annual license fee is $60 ($30 for Juniors) and expires on 12/31/08. One-day license fee is $10 and available at pre-registration and race day registration. Event held under USA Cycling Permit. USA Cycling/USCF rules apply. Event held rain or shine; no refunds.

Course: The “Art of Cyclocross” is held on the grounds of the Muckenthaler Cultural Center. Known primarily for art exhibitions, theater performances, and musical concerts, the Muckenthaler mansion and theater are located within 8 acres of parkland just a mile west of downtown Fullerton. Racers will speed up and down green hillsides, through groves of trees, and past rows of palms and the historic 1924 Italianate Muckenthaler mansion.

Background Information: The Muckenthaler home was built by Walter and Adella Muckenthaler in 1924 on eight acres located atop a hill just west of downtown Fullerton. Designed by architect Frank Benchley, the Italian Renaissance-style structure is reminiscent of buildings constructed for San Diego’s 1915 Exposition in Balboa Park. The 18-room mansion was donated to the city in 1965 by Harold Muckenthaler who wished to see his childhood home used as a cultural center for the public to enjoy. Today the Muckenthaler Cultural Center hosts 5-10 art exhibitions each year in galleries housed on two floors of the mansion. The Center offers art classes for children and adults. The amphitheater is home to the Muckenthaler Repertory Theater Company, which performs plays and offers conservatory classes for students.

If You Want A US Race Series, Now Is The Time To Act!!!

Mountain Bike Racing is not dead it’s getting better…

Scott Tedro’s Call To Action: If You Want A US Race Series, Now Is The Time To Act

From: Scott Tedro/Sho-Air Intl.
“At the end of July several key industry teams, riders and management approached Team Sho-Air with a request for us to take over the now defunct National Mountain Bike Series. We recognized this request as an honor and challenge from the mountain bike community. Since then I have taken the necessary steps to produce a working model for the United States Cup in 2009. I have invested countless hours and extensive financial resources to ensure that America can have the National Unified Pro/Am mountain bike series in 2009 that not only does the community deserve, but that you asked for.”

“In the past two months I have personally traveled to Colorado Springs to meet with USA Cycling President Steve Johnson and his staff, I have received their support and guidance. I have worked hard to achieve support and commitments from event organizers of top venues to join the series “Sea Otter, Fontana, and Mt. Snow” etc. I have worked with the UCI to insure all events are in scripted at the highest level in order to provide maximum point payout for our Pro riders, and I have worked with various industry expert service providers and promoters to take this series from concept to blueprint for success. I have presented you with the turn key solution you requested, and I am willing to take it from blueprint to execution should you choose to support it.”

WHAT OUR INDUSTRY CAN DO
“Now we need commitment from the industry itself. The series will include extensive plans for marketing to create excitement and attendance. I highly recommend that you reach out to each other and challenge each other to support this endeavor. If we just get five manufacturers to come together for a modest racing investment, we can pull off the best racing series the US has ever seen and re-ignite the passion for racing and pro riders in the US. We can make this happen.”

“The reality is this: If Team Sho-Air does not have the pledged, written financial commitment from the necessary industry leaders/teams by September 19th, 2008, all efforts on the series will cease. I am, at the request of several of you willing to extend that date until October 3rd. I have also been requested to make myself available to any and all interested for a meeting at the USA Cycling booth during Interbike. Please contact Kelli Lusk at USA Cycling to confirm a date and time to meet.”

“Please take action now and contact me with your written commitment and or contact Kelli Lusk to confirm your involvement at Interbike. It was at your urging that I took on the task of creating the United States Cup; now I request your backing. Imagine what racing in the US can be again. Let’s make this happen.”

Respectfully,

R. Scott Tedro

The Countdown to Cross Vegas – 2008

From: Cyclocross Magazine
by Brook Watts

Riders to Watch in the First Cyclocross Showdown of the Season

Cross Vegas 08

With a short week to go the field is almost set for the first cyclocross showdown of the season at CrossVegas. Both the men’s and women’s field will feature strong fields of competitors including many riders just off of a summer of racing including the Beijing Olympic Games and the just concluded Tour of Missouri.

CrossVegas takes place Wednesday September 24 at the Desert Breeze Soccer Complex in Las Vegas located a few miles from the famous “Vegas Strip.” Timed to take place during the Interbike trade show, CrossVegas attracted over 5,000 spectators in its first year in 2007.

The evening of racing kick off with the “Alpha Q Wheelers and Dealers Race” featuring bicycle industry participants vying for bragging rights in categories that include media, manufacturer, retailer, distributor and advocacy.

In the “Scott USA Elite Men’s Race” look for inaugural CrossVegas winner Ryan Trebon to bring his always strong form to Las Vegas where he will line up with fellow Kona strongman Barry Wicks. The duo used their collective strength last year to set up Trebon’s last lap attack that took him to victory.

Just a few of the others on the start line will be:

- Jonathan Page, silver medalist in the 2007 world championships now racing for the Planet Bike team

- Tim Johnson and Jeremy Powers of the Cyclocrossworld.com Team, both coming from strong performances in the Tour of Missouri will be

- Craig Adams of Team Giant and Todd Wells of GT who are coming off of Beijing Olympic racing

- Tony Cruz of the BC Racing Team who just completed a strong road season that included the Tour of Missouri

Of special note is Thomas Frishknecht of the Scott-Swisspower Team who will be competing in the final event of his 19-year career. Frischknecht has selected CrossVegas as his final race in the U.S. with longtime sponsors Scott USA and Ritchey Design pitching in to throw a farewell celebration that promises to be unforgettable.

The “Scott USA Elite Women’s Race” will be without a returning champion with the retirement of Lyne Bessette but the talent pool will be just as deep. Katie Compton of the Spike Shooter team finished 2nd in the 2007 race and promises to start the new season equally strong.

Other riders to watch include:

- Luna Women’s Team riders Katerina Nash and Georgia Gould, finished 3rd and 4th last year and should be eager to challenge Compton for the top step of the podium

- Wendy Simms cracked the top ten in 2007 and should be eager to climb up the ranking

New to CrossVegas this year is the Double Down at Mandalay Bay award that will recognize those riders with a vacation prize for the top men and women riders who compete in both CrossVegas the USA CRITS Finals scheduled the next night.

CrossVegas is owned by Cross Partners LLC, a Boulder Colorado based group headed by Chris Grealish and Brook Watts that stages international cyclocross events including CrossVegas. 2008 Sponsors include Alpha Q, Scott USA, Yakima, Clif Bar, Challenge Tires, TRP, Dale’s Pale Ale, VeloNews, Qdoba Mexican Grill, Vermarc and Clark County Parks Department.
