Mission Viejo woman celebrates 40th with 40-mile run

She ran a mile for every year
By LINDSEY BAGUIO
Thursday, October 23, 2008

MISSION VIEJO — Sally Boles ran for her life — without question. She felt a warm breeze, the sun against her back, and a whole lot of love when she set out to run around Lake Mission Viejo on her 40th birthday Thursday. “I didn’t want a party,” Boles said. The 5-feet-8, 128-pound mother of three just wanted to run 40 miles. Boles, of Mission Viejo, began at 5:15 a.m. with friends who had decorated signs with words of encouragement and had posted them along the course of the lake.

Sellers told me he did the same thing when he turned 40, only he ate 40 baked goods from Starbuck’s in 40 minutes instead. See you at the start line on Saturday Greg. Save me a scone for after the race.

Saturday morning I got up early, dressed quietly, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, slipped quietly into the garage to hook the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour.

The wind was blowing 50 mph. I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad throughout the day.

I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. There I cuddled up to my wife’s back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.”

My loving wife of 20 years replied, “Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?”

I still don’t know if she was joking, but I’ve given up fishing.

The gnarilest thing I have ever seen

All I have to say is stick in the leg! He was on a ride last week after the storm the weekend before last. The guy he was riding behind ran over a large branch which kicked up and impaled Bob’s leg when he ran into it. The EMT’s had to cut the ends of the branch off to get him in the ambulance.

Soft launch of the brand new MotorTabs.com

Greg and Chris did an excellent job on getting the new MotorTabs.com up and running. The site is still in soft launch mode as many new features will be added soon. By far the most respectable page on the site is the Athletes page, they have some heavy hitters using the product.

Check out the new site at:
www.motortabs.com

What is Motor Tabs you ask?
MOTOR TABS™ Fluid Replacement System turns ordinary water into a smooth, refreshing sports drink! It’s as simple as dropping an effervescent tablet into water. Designed for use any time around participatory athletic activity or when additional electrolytes are required, MOTOR TABS is a portable sports drink that can go anywhere, as the tablets are individually wrapped in water/air tight foil packages that protect them from sweat, dirt and other harmful elements. Whether it’s on the bike, run, hike, gym or at work, MOTOR TABS restores vital fluids that are lost during physical activity or illness.

I’m the biggest fan of Motor Tabs on the planet. I use them daily in my training. If you are looking for an incredible tasting, portable sports drink that works then give Motor Tabs a try.

Riding with Austin Carroll of Rock Racing

Two nights ago Julie gave me a pass to go and spin my legs on the road bike. Riding consistency is out but riding when I get the chance is in. I quickly took her up on the offer and headed out after work to meet her in Irvine for some dinner. Cruising along rockin out to my iPod I rolled past a dude dialed in with a Rock Racing kit and bike set-up. I’m intrigued and slowly begin to stock him. If you know me, you know I love the Rock Racing team. He was fixing something on his bike so I waited for him on the path.

As he rolled by I glanced at him like I wanted to talk. He pulled out his ear buds and we proceed to ride together for the next 5 miles. My new BFF is a pro racer by the name of Austin Carroll. In between the awkard moments of me almost crashing and asking prying questions he was truly a super nice dude. I think I was star struck as this was the first pro I had ever met. The conversation was fun, I asked him questions about Rock Racing, Floyd Landis, racing in Europe (he leaves to race on Saturday), training, being a pro, etc. The stuff you want to ask but never get the chance. We have an interview planned for when he returns from Europe.

Check him out at:

Nice guy and he didn’t even mind that I almost made him crash which would ruin the rest of his season.

I love Top Golf

So we’ve been having the classic “Indian Summer” out here on the east coast and I’ve been loving it. Normally we’re seeing the temps dip around this time of year, but its been in the upper 70s to low 80s all week. Tuesday night after work a couple co-workers and I decided that early sunsets weren’t going to keep us from hitting a few, so we made a visit to Top Golf . Let me just reiterate, I love Top Golf. It’s like a giant video game for adults. Each ball has a chip inside of it, and it’s programmed with your information. You hit just like at a normal driving range, but the flags are in the middle of giant circles that give you points depending on how close to the pin you get. It’s great for practicing your accuracy, however, it also made me realize I need to have some extended sessions with my driver…

Storm the Beach!

Storming the Beach at SoCalCross Prestige Series #3

Need a little more Euro-style cyclocross in your life? Well, then make sure to come out to the Storm the Beach Cyclocross in Oceanside, CA this weekend. The race, presented by Celo Pacific, is considered by many to be the “Queen Stage” of the SoCal Cyclocross Prestige Series.

It is patterned after the famous Duinencross race in Koksijde Belgium and takes place on Camp Pendleton’s “Red Beach” where the U.S. Marine Corps practice their amphibious landings. On Sunday you’ll find racers lugging their bikes up steep seaside bluffs, plowing across ever-morphing sand dunes, and dodging the surf in search of a perfect line as they ride parallel to the Pacific Ocean. Wide tires, low pressure, running fitness, and enough power to leave a rooster tail of sand in your wake are the keys to doing well here. Mixing this tough course with the best cyclocross talent in SoCal will ensure an
exciting day of racing.

Six different races will provide the opportunity for sixteen different categories of riders to test their skills against the course and against each other. Categories include: Elite Men 1/2/3, Elite Women 1/2/3, Men 3/4, Men 4, Women 3/4, Masters Women 35+, Elite Masters Men 35+ (1/2/3), Masters Men 35+ (3/4), Masters Men 45+, Masters Men 55+, Junior Boys 10-14, Junior Girls 10-14, Junior Boys 15-18, Junior Girls 15-18, SingleSpeed 1/2/3 and SingleSpeed 4. Competitors will be vying for over $2000 in cash and merchandise as well as much coveted points towards the season-long individual and team SCPS standings.

In addition to the categorized racing, a free Kids Race will take place at 12:00 pm with prizes going to all participants. There will also be a “Boardshorts and Bikinis” race at 1:30 pm (no USA Cycling
license required) with prizes awarded to the riders with the wackiest beach attire.
