The U.S. Cup presented by Specialized featuring the Kenda Cup Westopener at Bonelli Park looks to be
shaping up for a barn burner if the pre registered rider list is any indication? So far pre registration for the 2009 Kenda Cup West cross country event was up over 41% when compared to last year’s entries at the San Dimas venue.

The Pro field is starting to look like a who’s who is cross country racing. As of today, Santa Ynez National winner Sid Taberlay is confirmed for Sunday’s cross country along with Sho-Air/Specialized team mates Sam Jurekovic and Manny Prado. Kenda’s Andy Schultz has also confirmed his start in Sunday’s cross country event, along with KHS/Cytomax national regulars Chuck Jenkins and Sean Donovan and a host of local and regional talent. The men’s four lap Pro XC race on the all new designed course should make for an exciting day of racing, when the gun goes off at 12:30pm.

The women’s Pro field also gets a boost with the confirmed entry of 3X Xterra World ChampionMelanie
McQuaid. McQuaid will round out the Sho-Air/Specialized domestic factory squad for Sunday’s event and looks to be a favorite leading into the women’s pro cross country event.
The US Cup also announced its first winner of the Hayes Lucky 12 contest. Philip Beckman, a CAT 1 50-54 racer from Lake Arrowhead, California was randomly selected from the pre registered rider list from Sportsbase Online. David Zabriskie’s home is burglarized

Garmin-Slipstream’s David Zabriskie had his house broken into while he was racing in last week Tour of California where he placed second overall.

Zabriskie’s home burglarized

While the Web-based cycling community was all a-Twitter over the recent theft and return of Lance Armstrong’s time trial bike, another cyclist has suffered a bigger loss of personal property, but did not discover it until he returned from the recent Amgen Tour of California. Salt Lake City Police have issued an appeal for the public’s help in recovering items stolen in a burglary at the home of Garmin-Slipstream’s David Zabriskie. According to police, the break-in occurred while Zabriskie was in California for the recent Amgen Tour.

Police also issued a partial list of items stolen and asked for help in their recovery, particularly if any turn up in local pawnshops or on eBay. Among those items stolen from Zabriskie’s home are:

• Black 2008 Subaru Outback, Utah plate A189NC
• Black 2006 Toyota Scion, Utah plate 094VWM
• Giro D Italia Race Medal (approx. 6″ circumference)
• Olympic Seiko watch
• Beijing Olympic ring (silver) with initials “DZ” engraved ($4,000)
• Olympic Time Trial Bike, plus 12 other bikes (combined value of $100,000)
• Cervelo (black/red) bike frame – team issued ($5000)
• Tag Heuer watch ($6,000)

Good Semeritan-The Trail Dr.

After killing myself climbing the mountains of Southern California in Silverado Canyon on Saturday again this weekend, I decided to take it easy today for a spin through my local trails at Newport Coast, CA just one of the OC Wilderness Parks to find some drier dirt.

It was a blast as the dirt was tacky and while ripping across one of my favorite trails, “The Fence line,” 4 times tonight as I did some loops. I noticed a man out killing himself more than I did this weekend. He was shoveling the dirt and doing needed trail work from the recent rains so on the third pass I stopped to say hello and see how he was doing. Then I found out this digger, Rich Elliot, was just out doing a little friendly trail work because he can. He is not part of any group, not getting paid, rather he is just a Mountain Biker who rides the area often and loves the trail too so he decided to use his Sunday making the trail drain water that was holding, flatten out muddy and sandy sections. The result is the trail is in better condition than I have ever seen it which is probably why I rode it so many times tonight.

Thanks Rich for doing the trail gods work!

Next storm I am fixing a trail too.

Snowy Southern California

With all the recent storms in Southern California, and more on the way, it has made for a few inches or more of snow around the local mountains…

The top of Saddleback Mtn. could not even be seen last weekend and the snow started to show on the trails about 1,400ft.

The sites were great and my climb was awesome but a little chilly and slick as I climbed up The Maple Springs Trail, In Silverado Canyon, Orange County, CA.

I was doing fine with the mud, snow and cold until 2,340ft. elevation where there was so much snow that my slick tires were not going much farther…

So, I stopped for a little pic of myself before I headed back down… The purpose was to show the steam coming from me and off my body but I guess the camera wanted to call me a liar because I can’t see it.

This week it only rained once so I figured I would pedal back up the Maple Springs trail to check out the snow and get to the top. However, once again the snow was too thick but the temperatures were much more manageable as I could actually feel my knuckles this week.

This photo was in the same spot where the trail was nothing but snow and I had to stop the week prior and this week I was only able to climb another few hundred feet in elevation but the amount of snow that is still accumulated on the mountain is amazing.

I can’t wait for next weekend

Compression Gear: Fact vs. Fiction

As I’ve posted about in the past, I’m a huge fan of compression products. This article from AmateurEndurance.com sheds a little more light.

Compression Gear: Fact vs. Fiction
By Dr. Victor J. Runco, DC

Athletes of all genres, including the running and triathlon communities have an interest in injury prevention and performance enhancement. Products come along that are marketed at these groups with claims of scientific studies that prove their effectiveness. Typically these claims are false and amount to nothing more than propaganda by the manufacturer.

Crazy Carter

This is a just for fun video of my oldest son Carter, he’s 2 1/2. Every night after his bath his mom puts lotion on his little chicken wings (arms and legs) and this is what happens immediately after.

My boys are amazing and make me laugh everyday.

BIG SUR MARATHON EXTENDS REGISTRATION FEE DEADLINE

Everyone is trying to do there part for the stimulus package. The Big Sur Marathon organization is awesome and they have a good one for us here.

Registration fees for the Big Sur Marathon have been extended at their current prices until March 15. Originally scheduled to increase on March 1, the nearly sold out marathon is offering a break to last minute deciders.

“With the economy the way it is we decided not to raise our fees for another two weeks,” stated Wally Kastner, race director of the internationally acclaimed marathon. “We know that runners will be spending money in our destination so hopefully this small break will help spur them to make their decision to sign up.

The current registration fee for the marathon is $135 per person with costs going toward bus transportation, CalTrans, California Highway Patrol and myriad other expenses associated with executing a large race. As with other race events, the registration fees rise as the event nears. The registration fee for the marathon will be $150 after March

A field of 12,000 participants is expected for the marathon and additional runs including the marathon relay, 21, 10.6 and 9 Milers, 5K and JUST RUN! Just Kids 3K. Runners signed up for the 2009 event are coming from all 50 states and 24 countries, with numbers rising each day.

Bike Happenings

If you’ve ever found yourself in San Luis Obispo, CA on the first Thursday of the month, you’re likely to have run into a motley crew of bikers overtaking the streets of the sleepy college town.  A local filmmaker and Cal Poly grad has recently finished shooting a documentary about these “Bike Happenings.”  For those of us who’ve experienced this and for those who plan to, this looks like a movie that is definitely worth seeing.  Check out the trailer.

I performanced really well at stage 3 of Tour of California today

Stage 3 of the Tour of California for me was difficult but rewarding. The weather forced me to look deep down inside, I’m glad I pushed through and persevered. The support of my team got me through today.

I’m planning on taking stage 4,

Velo-One Cycling club plus a new training camp

For the last few year’s I’ve been a part of the most incredible cycling team in So Cal, Team Velosport, the cycling team of my favorite shop Rock N Road Cyclery, in Orange County, CA. I miss that community of cyclists and my friends at Rock N Road made me laugh every time I came by. Its funny what you end up missing once you no longer have it.

Living in Fort Collins, CO for the last few months has been an interesting change when it comes to exercise and training. It’s flippin cold outside so riding/training inside is more of an option. Through my gym’s spin class I found out about a local cycling club called Velo-One Cycling. I’ve heard great things about the club and I look forward to riding with them when it warms.

The 2009 Velo-One Cycling Camp posted on their site has caught my attention. Julie doesn’t know it yet but I think I want to go. It’s a 3 day training camp in April that takes place in Estes Park, CO, the place is gorgeous and at around 8,000 ft. Nice time to meet local cyclists and get some solid miles put in.
