Dean Potter Solo Highlining at Yosemite

Some photos from Jeff Cunningham of Dean Potter’s recent solo highline work at Taft Point in Yosemite. The prAna blog has plenty more photos. In Jeff’s, words: Dean had a high line set up there that he measured as somewhere between 99 to 100 feet. He had walked the line leashed a few times when I saw him untying from the tether. I figured he was just taking a break. Instead, he stepped up to the line and started walking it with confidence and determination.

The Outdoor Parent Helps Parents Get Outside With Their Kids

I love this concept and blog post over at The Cleanest Line.

“Today, in conjunction with the Dirtbag Diaries, The Outdoor Parent begins in earnest. Our goal: provide stoke. Stoke to get you out of bed before dawn for a long run through the woods or a solid surf session at a favorite break. Stoke to rally the kids out for a weekend of camping beneath dark, starry skies or just around the corner to edges of your local park. We celebrate skinned knees, hand me down jeans…”

The twins take on the Bolder Boulder

Yesterday (Memorial Day), Julie and twin clone Alison tackled the Bolder Boulder in Boulder, CO. It was a crazy morning. The girls left the house with their dad at 5:30 am and I followed up with the boys and grandma at 6:20 am. It’s around an hour drive to Boulder. When we arrived in Boulder I have NEVER seen so much traffic. Over 57,000 people raced, it’s the largest 10k in the country. We heard over 1 million people were in town. You could tell.

Julie’s stats (see first image above):

00:47:34.77 total
07:39 pace
22 out of 764 in division

Alison’s stats:

We don’t know she got DQed for switching corrals. So lame. She had a great race also.

Fun day, great event and fast race for the girls. Later that night we signed Julie up for the California Half Ironman in March 2010. She’s on a roll!

Orange Motor Tabs

Yesterday after hours at the desk typing and mousing I pulled on my Outside All Day kit and grabbed the Bianchi for a beach ride down to Torrance. The wind was up but I was ready to clear my head of keyboard strokes. As I pulled onto the strand a guy behind me says, “Nice tempo.” I edge my head around to see a guy in his forties on his ezee electric bike. I shrug. He says, you want a pull? I’m like, “sure.” And so for the next four miles I get in the slipstream and average 20 mph. Beautiful. On the way back with the wind in my face and with a serious ocean distraction to my left I sip on my Orange Motor Tabs and think happy thoughts.

Get out there.

Newton redefines running shoes

Newton Running Shoes, my fav shoes will be opening a retail location in Boulder, CO tomorrow (May 25). This feels like a huge step for a smaller more boutique shoe line. I love it!

You can test drive cars, test ride a bike, why not a running shoe? Finally, a local running shoe company is giving this opportunity. Newton Running, manufacturer of a unique running shoe, is opening their first store on Friday just in time for the Bolder Boulder. Just jog right in and you can experience a trial run outside the boundaries of the store’s four walls. The large and colorful store is located at 13th and Walnut in Boulder, facing One Boulder Plaza. Inside you’ll find an impressive display of Newton Running shoes, in their bold colors and sharp design.

Julie and Alison are running the Bolder Boulder 10k tomorrow in Boulder. There are 56,000 people running and supposed to be 1 million folks in town. Crazy! I hope to make it by their new shop.

Below is a video of Newton Running founder Danny Abshire demonstrating the finer points of forefoot running: proper athletic position; finding your sweet spot; the difference between walking stride, jogging stride, efficiency running and spiriting; and using the Land, Lever, Lift technique to perfect your form.

By Mark Allen (Triathlete magazine)

Have you ever had this experience? Your training went well, you set PRs in every key workout and you even worked through your list of to-do items in record time—but you ended up having a terrible race anyway. Or maybe you’re familiar with this scenario: you’ve beaten your training partner in just about every workout, but then he or she served you notice on race day by easily pulling away on the first hill on the bike course. Rock N’ Road Named Top 100 Bicycle Retailer 5th Straight Year

It’s always fun to see Rock N Road Cyclery be successful. Congrats to Matt Ford and team…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bicycle Mag Names Top Bike Shops In America – OC’s Rock N’ Road Named Top 100 Bicycle Retailer for 5th Straight Year

The bicycle industry leadership has determined what Rock N’ Road Cyclery’s customers already knew … Rock N’ Road excels in “market share, community outreach, and store appearance.” What made reaching the Bicycle Retailer and Industry News Top 100 Retailers of 2009 especially satisfying was that Rock N’ Road was one of only 37 bike shops in America to reach the Top 100 five years in a row.

Yahoo reviewer Dwainew says it this way, ” These guys ROCK!: I’ve NEVER been denied help by these guys when in need. They do get back-logged for detailed work, like everybody else, but here you’ll find friendly, helpful people that want to help you! If it’s a quick fix, they’ll probably do it right there for you!”

Way to go guys, you have always treated your customers the best!

Short track racing at New Belgium

I forgot to mention in my wrap-up from Sunday that 2 weeks back I hit up the last race in the New Belgium Short Track Series. My category did 4 laps, each lap was around 5.5 minutes long, the videos below show the course well. My average heart rate over the 25 minutes was 186, for me, that’s going hard. Ended up getting 4th place out of 22 dudes. As you can see I’m sportin my new Velo-One Team Kit. It’s a fun social team and I really enjoy the other riders. I’ll always miss my Rock N Road team though. We heard rumor that they have a cross series in the fall, that would rock!

While at the race I fell in love with an MTB glove vendor, Jett MTB. Hooked myself up with a pimpin pair of white gloves. The only problem with white is that my orange Motor Tabs are dying them a little. Oh well, they still look hot! I know Sellers will be jealous when he sees them.

FEAT is a feature documentary chronicling one man’s coast-to-coast quest to run 63 marathons in 63 days for kids whose own feet lack the strength to run. Endurance runner Tim Borland seeks to raise awareness and funding for children battling the rare terminal disease, ataxia-telangiectasia or A-T. Unlocking the mysteries of this orphan disease may lead to cures for more prevalent diseases like Cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.

FEAT exemplifies the limitless potential of the human body and spirit when focused on a goal greater than oneself.

Giro riders stop midway through the Milan circuit to protest unsafe conditions.

Giro riders stop midway through the Milan circuit to protest unsafe conditions.
By Velo News
May 17, 2009

Times taken from the ninth stage of the Tour of Italy will not count towards the race’s general classification following a protest from the peloton on Sunday, officials said.

The 165km ninth stage is being held on a 11km circuit inner city circuit, but after riding at the relatively slow speed of 33kph (20.5 mph), the bunch stopped six laps from the finish to protest at unsatisfactory security measures.

A lot of the pros in the race today were complaining about the circuit on Twitter. Must have been bad.
