Who Has Won 100 Elite Cyclocross Races?

prenzlow circa98
Vintage 1990′s Brent Prenzlow

Guest Editor: Mark Campaigne, Celo Pacific Cycling

I came across an interesting statistic this week. Celo Pacific’s own ace cyclocrosser, Brent Prenzlow, has 99 ELITE level cyclocross wins (does not include Masters or other races prior to reaching the Elite level). He will compete this Sunday at Storm the Beach, his “home” course, with the opportunity to reach the 100 Elite win milestone.

I want to take this opportunity to mention something just as remarkable about Brent, who as many of you know, is a relatively soft-spoken, humble guy. The time & energy he spends unselfishly volunteering for the club is off the charts. From website design and updates, building our cross courses, bringing in sponsors, to mentoring our amateur racers, he gives up countless hours of time he otherwise could be out doing something else…like training!

A little more on his bio: He has spent 15 seasons of hard work and dedication to cyclocross – almost all of it with Celo Pacific. He’s proud of his accomplishments, but never overly confident. With 100 wins just on the horizon, his goals don’t stop there…”The one thing missing from my resume is a national jersey. I need to take care of that,” he says.

I know he’d love to get the big win this weekend. This weekend brings Storm the Beach in Oceaside, California on his home course, in front of his team, family, and friends but we all know you can’t predict what will happen in a cyclocross race, or who will show up on good form. I assure you Brent will give 100% and we will all hope for the best. Please come on out and cheer him on.

SCPS #7: Spooky Cross Night Race, Irvine, CA
Southern California Prestige Series of Cyclocross presented by Shimano

There were more costumes around the venue before sundown than Target has stocked the first week of October. The racing was great all day but as it got dark the event went from stock to sick! Spooky Cross brought a record amount of riders to the Southern California Prestige series and a high profile group, current and legendary champions of cycling, motocross stars Johnny O’Mara and Ben Bostrom, Pro road rider Tony “The Count” Cruz, and from the world of Mountain Biking there were Ned Overend, Sid Taberlay, and Brian Lopes.

The race was magical. While there seemed to be a lot of long straight sections the guys from Rock N’ Road along with the SoCalCross designers did a great job adding a wide variety of technical aspects to the course. For example, the longest sand section in a race, outside of the beach, which came into a sharp 180-degree turn and up into the dark and spooky forest. It was a great experience for riders and spectators alike as everyone enjoyed the tasty foods from the Green Truck run on veggie oil and the event was solar powered by Energy Efficiency Solar, music from DJ Echo Brown and three different bands kicking off with the Gruesome Twosome, the Rims and feature rock band: Kinkade.

While the elite fields had some awesome racing the Team Duke Spooky Cross Costume relay race spectacle was a frighteningly hilarious sight. The event benefited the John Wayne Cancer Foundation and one lucky participant won a pair of Oakley Sunglasses! The Phelps brothers seemed to take an early lead while their chest were getting chaffed from their medals. And a lot of others did not seem to care about the race as much as showing off their character or smashing the pumpkin hurdles. El Guapo the infamous wrestling sensation body slammed at least four freshly carved harvests before returning to his bike and threatening the crowds.

The young Kendall Ryan (Team SoCal Cross/CICLE) again dominated the elite women’s field. It was a hard fought battle but she was able to monopolize on Megan Elliott’s (Black Mountain Cyclery) bobble in the super sand pit as she opened just enough of a gap to put in one last attack that would stick allowing her to ride in for the win with Elliot finishing second. The first chase was another great battle as teammates Dorothy Wong and Alexis Ryan (Team SoCal Cross/CICLE) battled with “Killer Bee” Beatriz Rodriguez (InCycle), Lana Atchley and Nor Cal visitor Melody Metzger (Cal Giant). The chase group broke apart with Atchley and Alexis Ryan settling into a battle for the 3rd spot on the podium. Rounding out the top five it was Lana Atchley taking third, 16 year old Alexis Ryan fourth, Dot Wong (Team SoCal Cross/CICLE) taking in fifth, and “Bee” Rodriguez taking 6th.

The ultra competitive elite men’s field had the strongest group of the year and the best racing yet. Series leader Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific/B&L) was ready for a battle as Sid Taberlay (Sho-Air) was back out this week looking to take a win after finishing second to Prenzlow the previous week. But, Rock N’ Roads Gritters brothers also had some ideas to take a win at their home course. From the start it looked like it was going to be Rock N’ Road’s Gritters brothers who controlled the race with Prenzlow sitting in second. Taberlay had a fast start and a big crash in the first turn putting him in dead last after he was back on his bike from the wreckage. Kyle Gritters lead through the first lap with Prenzlow in second and brother Brandon in third. It seemed as Kyle was going to open a gap but Prenzlow never let it get too far as he reeled him back in on the third lap to command the lead, leaving Brandon behind setting the pace for the first chase group. The chase group was together at first with Brandon Gritters, John Bailey and Donny Carrol (Bailey Bikes), Ned Overend (Specialized), Gary Douville (Platinum) and others. But, around this third lap things started to break up. Sho-Air’s Ben Bostrom launched a huge effort taking the lead on the chase that broke it apart. However, he paid for the effort ending his night early with three laps to go. It was an unfortunate night for Bailey too as he had to make an early visit to the pits due to mechanical issues but was still able to pull out a top ten finish.

From here is was the second chase group whom started to crack and guys dropped but only because another rider came flying through the field. Sid Taberlay came back from the crash and was on a mission to catch the front. With Prenzlow and Kyle Gritters on the front it was Taberlay and Brandon who opened the next gap on the chase, putting out their own efforts to catch the leaders.

In the end it was a fantastic fight as Prenzlow threw out one more huge effort entering the super sand pit but Gritters was able to hold on. The two came around the last turn and it came down to a sprint finish once the two hit the pavement but it was Prenzlow by a bike length to take the biggest win of the year and Kyle Gritters finishing 2nd. About thirty-seconds behind it was Sid Taberlay and Brandon Gritters. Taberlay squeezed out Gritters with one last effort through the sand and then the dark forest to have a ten-second gap for 3rd with Brandon in 4th. And, to round out the top five it was another battle as the second chase still in tack came flying in with four riders sprinting for the line. It was Donny Carol (Bailey Bikes) who just pulled ahead of Gary Douville, Overend, and Jason Siegle for fifth.

Thank you to all who came out and to Rock N’ Road Cyclery for hosting such a great event! Join us again next week as the forecast calls for sun, sand, surf, and cyclocross with Storm the Beach 2009 at Camp Pendelton in Oceanside, California. We look forward to a tough course with all the classic sandy elements Oceanside has to offer.

COMING UP NEXT: STORM THE BEACH, SUNDAY, NOV 1ST

It’s almost half way through cyclocross season here in Southern California, and there hasn’t been any mud worth mentioning in the SoCalCross Prestige Series presented by Shimano. Nevertheless, we can guarantee that your lust for epic racing will be slated for November 1st when the SCPS makes stop number eight in Oceanside, CA for Storm the Beach Cyclocross. Presented by Celo Pacific, Storm the Beach is patterned after the famous Duinencross race in Koksijde Belgium. Racers will be challenged by steep seaside bluffs, undulating sand dunes, high speed fire roads, and the Pacific Ocean itself as they dodge the surf for 400 meters along incoming waves. The race has been scheduled this year to coincide with low tide so that nobody will actually have to ride in the surf as has occurred previously (then again, if you want to go for a dip with your bike, we’re not going to stop you).

After the race, you’ll be able to wash off those layers of sand, dust, and sea spray courtesy of Nomad Portable Power Cleaners. Fifteen fields across six races means that there is a skill level and an age group for every ability level. In addition, a free kids fun race will take place at 2:25 pm with prizes for all participants.

If you don’t want to race, come on out and watch: spectators can expect to see great racing all day long culminating in the Elite Women’s race at 1:30 pm and the Elite Men’s race, presented by Hoover and Nebrig, at 2:30 pm. The best cyclocross talent in the region will be chasing after SoCalCross series points and a generous prize list of $1200 in cash plus hundreds more in merchandise.

Racers, make sure to sign up at SportsBaseOnline as all pre-registered individuals will be entered in a race day raffle to win a set of wheels from Revolution Wheelworks. For more race information, go to www.celopacific.org

2009 XTERRA World Championship results

logo-worlds

At 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 25th, a maxed-out field of 550 international racers will embrace the annual challenge of XTERRA’s most grueling course – and in the ensuing hours put their mental and physical toughness up against Mother Nature’s arsenal of sun, sand, water, kiawe, and lava. When it’s all over, they’ll don some of the weirdest and most wonderful costumes you’ve ever seen and dance the night away at what is surely triathlon’s greatest after party.

Athletes from more than 20 countries and 40 states will gather on Maui – the spiritual birthplace of XTERRA – having competed all season long for the right to be at the World Tour’s culminating event. What begins as a gathering of relative strangers ends with a family whose friendship defies boundaries of title and expertise and unites them all in their quest to “Live More”. Maui’s XTERRA course is a classic point-to-point covering 27 miles of unyielding terrain.

SCPS #6: Long Beach Cross Festival

scps#6
Stop number six of the Southern California Prestige Series of Cyclocross presented by Shimano made its debut in the City of Long Beach and El Dorado Park, the city’s mega regional park and a new home to the sport of cyclocross.
The course was a mix of fast pavement, quick mulch gardens, and bumpy gopher punctured grass. It included a fun hillside step up taking riders down and through a lot of turns, a deep sand pit and a laberynth of turns taking riders around the course and back to the pavement straight-away. The course design was well-received by many of the racers with the great design collaboration of Velo Allegro, Lightning Velo, and SoCalCross’ designers’ Jonathan Livesay and Jeff Herring, who brought their experience continuing their magic to build a top caliber-UCI level course once again for the Prestige Series.

The day also brought in many racers still new to ‘cross including the large numbers of women and juniors as well as some notables in the elite men’s field including Long Beach Cycling Ambassador, Tony Cruz. Pro MTB tour Champion, Sid Taberlay and SoCalCross’ elite, Brent Prenzlow, Brandon Gritters, and John Bailey to name a few.

The elite men set their fastest pace yet this season. It was a high-speed start on the road that took riders into the trees of the slick pine needle covered forest. And, from the beginning it was Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific/B&L) with the hole shot and lead. Prenzlow set the pace on the day and did not slow down. Gary Douville (Team Platinum) rode out with Prenzlow on the first lap but said the pace was too uncomfortable after a lap and a half so he dropped back to the first chase group. From here it was Prenzlow all alone riding away for the win while the chase group held together tight for the real racing to happen. It was Sid Taberlay (Sho-Air), Brandon and Kyle Gritters (Rock N’ Road), Chance Noble (Cal Giant Strawberry), John Bailey (Bailey Bikes) and Motocross Superstar Ben Bostrom (Sho-Air). Eventually, the group began to fall apart, Noble almost hit a tree and fell back to the second chase and Bailey, while having strong rides recently and looking to be in great form, unfortunately, rolled two tubular tires leaving him with a long run to the pits. In the chase it was the Gritters brothers and Taberlay looking most eager to close the gap to Prenzlow. There were good efforts but by the end Taberlay opened his own gap on the brothers to ride in for second while the brothers finished third and fourth. Just behind it was Bostrom who took advantage of Douville who put out the big early efforts to round out the top six.

The elite women’s field continues to be dominated by Team SoCalCyclocross/CICLE’s Kendall Ryan. She had an awesome start and great battle with Lana Atchley (Sho-Air) until a male rider on course made an insolent move pushing the leader, Ryan, off course and through the tape almost crashing. It was just the gap that Atchley needed to take the win as Ryan dropped back to fourth place and had to fight her way back up to finish second. Beatriz Rodgriguez (SoCal Velo) is returning to her roots and racing cross this “off-season” put in some great efforts battling with Dorothy Wong (SoCalCyclocross/CICLE) and her work was just enough to allow herself third with Wong in fourth. In Fifth it was Alexis Ryan (SoCalCyclocross/CICLE) who barely beat Fortner Banna (Van Dessel). Banna had a great start in second with Ryan but it seemed that her early efforts were a bit too much today and she had to settle in behind Alexis.

Don’t miss the race of the season, Spooky Cross Night Race, this Saturday, 10/24 in Irvine, CA. It is going to have astounding racing, as the elite men’s field will be at its largest this season with Taberlay and Prenzlow looking for their rematch, costumes, and a west coast cross party only Oregon’s Cross Cult could compete with. We look forward to seeing everyone at Spooky Cross and remember to bring a friend or introduce someone new to the sport.

Is that me getting the holeshot?

100_1320

Yes that is me getting the holeshot at last week’s New Belgium cyclocross race. The only problem was I lost it after 200 yards, but it was a glorious 200 yards. At least my JETT MTB gloves look sweet!

New Belgium Cyclocross Series:

Week 1 – 5th place
Week 2 – 8th place (Click here for pictures from last week’s race)

If I could stay healthy this would be a fun cross season. So far not so good.

SCPS #4 and 5: Kross-Tober-Fest

Southern California Prestige Series of Cyclocross presented by Shimano
SCPS #4 and 5: Kross-Tober-Fest; October 10-11th 2009

Southern California’s Prestige Series of Cyclocross first dual cross event weekend was celebrated grandly with Kross-tober-fest. The Cross gods delivered, it was another weekend of perfectly sunny sixty-eight degree weather and the beer was flowing efficiently from the kegs strategically placed next registration. Furthermore, the women riders racing around in their Dirndl’s displayed the most impressive support of the new Cyclocross holiday.

Day 1: Saturday, October 10, 2009
It was another great showing of cross racing. The SoCalCross women’s CX scene has grown 300% this season especially in the Masters and beginner (CX3/4) categories. CRAZY!!! So many new faces and old in So Cal coming out this weekend including, Beatrice Rodriguez and Somersby Jenkins, now National Road Champions- started racing bikes with cyclocross, Kendall Ryan coming into form as an all around crosser and road racer and representing USA at the UCI Junior World Championships winning last two elite women’s races of our series. While Megan Elliot – former Team Saturn and Quark Pro and now racing CX in So Cal making for a new dynamic for the women’s SoCalCross scene. Go ladies!!!

The elite women took their starting positions with a couple of new faces in the mix this week. It was Megan Elliot of Black Mtn. Cycles who came out swinging. The women were out and within the first lap again it was the dominating Kendall Ryan (Team SoCalCross/CICLE) to take the lead. She was pulling the field until Tonya Bray (MtbChick) started to battle. The two seemed to be exchange efforts until Bray crashed and Ryan monopolized on the situation riding away to open enough of a gap to take the win. In second it was Bray who rode strong back onto the chase group and passed to take second. In third it was Dorothy Wong (Team SoCalCross/CICLE) followed closely by Elliot and the always-impressive youngster Alexis Ryan (Team SoCalCross/CICLE) to round out the top five.

In the elite men’s field the numbers were up again and it was Brandon Gritters (Rock N’ Road Cyclery) who came out looking to finally take a win from the series leader Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacifis/B&L’s). But, the maze like course had other ideas over the two days as high speed crashes and mechanicals were taking riders out of contention. Eventually, it was Prenzlow again who took the win with a 30 second gap on Gritters who took second. But, close behind it was Gary Douville (Team Platinum) and Kyle Gritters (Rock N’ Road Cyclery) who put on a good show as Gritters tried to set up Douville to take him in the final sprint but Douville stayed strong as the two sprinted it out to ride in for third and Kyle Gritters in Fourth. Rounding out the top five it was Jason Siegle (Bike Religion) soloed in for fifth with a little gap on the next chase group.

Southern California Prestige Series of Cyclocross presented by Shimano
SCPS #4 and 5: Kross-Tober-Fest; October 10-11th 2009

Day 2: Sunday, October 11, 2009
The early morning races were great and we have to mention some of the memorable racing that is showing from riders like Jon Miller (Rock N’ Road Cyclery) who continues to dominate the men’s 55+ field with every race he enters. And, Jeff Sanford (Celo Pacific) who took the win in both 35+ races this weekend.

In the elite women’s field we saw more new faces to the field as National Road Champion Beatriz Rodriguez (velo LaGrange) showed to celebrate cyclocross, her roots in bike racing, at Kross-tober-fest. However, the newcomer Megan Elliot (Black Mtn. Cycles) came again for redemption from day one. When the group was off early on it was Elliot who took the lead. Rodriguez seemed to be taking it easy as she let Wong (Team SoCalCross/CICLE) pass on second lap and the group settled in for the race. In the end it was Elliot who took the win with Dorothy Wong in second and Rodriguez in third. In a close fourth it was Susan Thompson (Pasadena Athletic Association) and rounding out the top five was Carol Rukle.

The elite men took course and there was unmarked hunger in the air as series leader Prenzlow (Celo Pacific/B&L) was not in the line-up. From the start it was fast and the lead group was hanging tight together. Again it was Rock N’ Road’s Gritters brothers up front with Mark Noble (nonstop ciclismo), Gary Douville (Team Platinum), and Bailey Bikes riders’ John Bailey and John Behrens. The group stayed fast but on the third lap an unfortunate flat put Siegle out of the race. Then with three laps to go the group finally began to break apart. It was Kyle Gritters who made the first move and then Noble with the second big attack. John Bailey looked fresh, staying in the mix and then delivered his own effort to tear the group apart. And, by the last lap it was the Gritters brothers riding tactically with Bailey towards the finish. The last attack was by Brandon Gritters who finally took his first win of the season after a couple races of strong second place finishes to series leader Prenzlow. Then it was Kyle and Bailey who sprinted in with Kyle in second and Bailey taking an impressive third as the brothers tactics barely held him off. Then rounding out the top five were Noble fourth and Douville in fifth.

Thanks again to everyone who came out to celebrate the new Kross-tober-fest holiday and to the volunteers who helped with this wonderful event. The next race is October 18 in Long Beach, California for the Long Beach Cross Festival.

Join us for SCPS #6 and the return to Cross Fever’s classic course, fallen tree, loose mulch, roller coaster course – fast with a short steep run up and sand pit. Long Beach cycling ambassador and Pro Cyclist Tony Cruz will be representing in the Pro Men’s race. Look for Junior National Road Champion Kendall Ryan to take on the best women in So Cal.

The picture above with Greg Sellers of Motor Tabs fame and Shemar Moore from the hit CBS show Criminal Minds was taken by the paparazzi this weekend at the Southern California MS 150 Charity Ride.

Our journalists are still researching the connection between Shemar and Sellers but insiders tell us they are developing a friendship. Interesting, as this would be Greg’s very first friend on record.
