Spin class already?

It appears that winter has come a little early here in Fort Collins, CO.

Last year spin class at Miramont was reserved for cold winter days that you would never want to ride outside, well, those days are here already, as of October 10! Of the 10 hours I rode this week, 5 of them were on the spin bike. The early season cold is throwing Julie and I off schedule. It’s currently 28 degrees outside with tons of snow on the ground. Pretty sure I’m not riding outside.

Tomorrow night (Monday) is a run on Devil’s Backbone with my buddy Mike Porter and Tuesday night is cyclocross race #2 at New Belgium.

If the weather is good for the upcoming weekend, the family and I will head to Cheyenne to race in the Laramie Cyclocross Series this Saturday night.

Here’s to riding inside!

EXCLUSIVE: Armstrong Announces 90% Completion Toward Transformation Into Huge Nerd

If this is going to be the trend for Lance’s new Shack cycling team it is going to be a fun year… Read the following from the guys at fat cyclist:
ST. LOUIS (Fat Cyclist Fake News Service) – Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion, announced today that he is now 90% of the way to the completion point of becoming a huge nerd.

“Yesterday, when I tweeted my new partnership with Michelob Ultra, I crossed a major Huge Nerd milestone: 90%,” said the surprisingly geeky cycling great. “Only 10% more to go, and my transformation will be complete.”

“While some may not immediately grasp the nerdliness of this announcement,” continued Armstrong, “once you get a feel for exactly what the Michelob Ultra line consists of, you’ll totally see exactly how dweeby I can be.”

According to the Michelob Ultra site’s Product Info page, Michelob Ultra (which Michelob always all-caps, but this news release will not, because THAT’S VERY ANNOYING) in addition to a lager and amber, contains three dorky, fruity drinks. They are described on the product site as follows:

* Michelob ULTRA Lime Cactus: A fruit-infused light pilsner with natural lime flavor and a floral essence derived from the cactus.
* Michelob ULTRA Pomegranate Raspberry: A pilsner with a berry aroma, raspberry flavor, and a hint of pomegranate.
* Michelob ULTRA Tuscan Orange Grapefruit: A pilsner with fresh juicy orange notes and a slight pink-grapefruit finish.

“Yes,” said Armstrong, “I really am acting as the product spokesman for beverages with ‘juicy orange notes, floral essences, and hints of pomegranate.”

Armstrong then executed a snorting laugh, hiked his pants up high above his waist — the cuffs now well above his ankles — and pulled out his Blackberry, at which poinnt he Tweeted, “Just did a snorty laugh and hiked my pants high above my waist.”

Trend Toward Nerditude

“With the Ultra announcement, I have increased my nerditude quotient by 30%,” said the increasingly geeky cycling legend. “My first big move in this direction was of course when I began Tweeting pretty much everything I do.“

“That, however, only brought me to 15%. A mere taste of the nerdvana I hope to obtain. My next — and I think most inspired — move toward absolute geektasticness was to secure cycling sponsorship from RadioShack.”

RadioShack, it should be noted, has won the award for “Nerdiest Store in America” every year since 1921, and does a brisk business in DIY robot kits, radio-controlled cars, and strobe lights.

“The RadioShack sponsorship was huge,” continued Armstrong, “bringing me all the way up to 60% on the Alfred E Neuman Nerditude Appearance Scale (AENNAS).

“But,” said the well-known advocate for cancer research, his voice growing serious, “I knew I could be more nerdly still. And that’s why I’ve chosen to back some of the dopiest-sounding drinks I’ve ever heard of in my life.”

“And I’m not done yet,” said the racing icon, his eyes flashing. “Nor will I be, until I am 100% nerdly.”

What’s Next

At this point of the announcement, Armstrong revealed a poster showing the following image:
armstrongnerd1
“As you can see, I am a visionary nerd,” said the visibly-proud Armstrong. “In addition to my recent partnerships with Michelob Ultra and RadioShack — by the way, I’m very pleased to announce the upcoming TRS-80 Model 2010, which will be released in concert with the 2010 Tour de France — I am leveraging my existing partnerships to help increase my goofiness.”

“Oakley, for example,” will soon be releasing the following new glasses:”
armstrongnerd2
“We’re still working out the details,” said Armstrong, “but in addition to the high-quality optics for which Oakley is known, there will be Oakley-branded tape holding the frame together. We are tentatively calling the material this ultra-low-weight, high-strength material this tape is made of ‘Electrotapium.”

“I am also proud to announce that I am working with Nike to create a new line of off-the-bike wear, consisting entirely of wicking polyester pants, designed to wrinkle, ride up high around the crotch, and just barely graze the top of your shoe when you stand still, showing generous flashes of sock when you walk.”

“It is my contention that these two products, when released later this year, will easily boost my goober factor by the 10% I need,” asserted Armstrong.

“This,” concluded the father of four, “will enable me to embarrass my children as thoroughly as any other father in America.”

Nobody Armstrong has ever met was available for comment.

SCPS #3: Velocity Attraction

Single Speed 3/4 Start
SCPS #3: Velocity Attraction

With the weather finally feeling like fall the cyclocross season has now got into full swing with round three of the Southern California Prestige Series of Cyclocross presented by Shimano was underway Sunday with a great event hosted by the Velocity Cycling Club. The course was fast, fun, and tricky leaving little room for rest as the Velocity group outdid themselves from last year’s disctrict championship course design making it another fantastic event for the Series.

I got out Saturday afternoon to see what the Velocity group would bring to Sunday’s race, knowing they were making changes to their course from the previous year, and it was impressive to see the number of volunteers and help they supplied to not only Saturday’s course design but also to Sunday’s event. I can’t praise them enough for such great support to the promoters and hope to see more efforts from groups like theirs in the future.

The numbers of competitors where up this week, with a total of 350 competitors, as the lower temps and the milder drive seemed to attract hoards of competitors and spectators alike. This brought record numbers junior competitors and women – masters and 3/4. The men’s cat 4, 3/4 and 35+ 3/4 also had an impressive draw.

The elite women took the course with a few more competitors this week and with fire as young Kendall Ryan-National road and track champion and contender at this year’s Junior Women’s World Road Championships, along with her teammates of Team SoCal Cross/CICLE Team dominated the course. Kendall had an early lead with Tonya Bray (YOR Health/MTBChick.com) and Dorothy Wong in tow. Kendall drove the pace stretching out the three leaders. Eventually, Tonya pulled into the pit with a mechanical and opened the door for Kendall who rode away for the victory. Team SoCal Cross/CICLE teammate Wong managed to keep distance from Tonya and Alexis Ryan, the teams reigning Junior 15-16 year old cyclocross champion).

The elite men started with its largest field of the season. It was Team Bearclaw’s Jason Lowetz who took the lead with a speed only rock stars could match. Until, the technical course to its toll and just before the end of the first lap it was Celo Pacific/B&L Bikes’ Brent Prenzlow who took the lead and eventually the win as the fast paced course definitely fit his style. The lead group was with Prenzlow as he started into the second lap but the courses tricky loose turns and little areas of rest put many riders further back or off their bikes as lead group started to break apart on course. In a close second, it was Rock N’ Road Cyclery’s Brandon Gritters who made an impressive jump from sitting in eighth on the first lap. Eventually, an unfortunate bobble put Gritters off the leader but his power still allowed him to finish second on the day. In third and fourth it was a battle, until an early crash put John Bailey (Bailey Bikes) out of contention. Jason Siegle (Bike Religion) and Gary Douville (Platinum) worked together trying to get back on the leaders but they would finish third and fourth. And, in fifth it was Bailey Bikes Donny Carroll who finished strong after his teammates early crash.

Thank you to all who came out to such a great event. Join us again next week at Frank G. Bonelli Park in San Dimas for KROSS-TOBERFEST as the SoCalCross Prestige Series season hits full speed ahead celebrating its European roots with our version of Oktoberfest. Bring your favorite BBQ items and hang out in the picnic pavilion as promoters play festively flavored “euro” music along the way. Wear your favorite Oktoberfest garb and participate in the Kross-toberfest Team Relay Race.

Look forward to a brand new course with all the classic cyclococross elements including a fast straight pavement start, a dirt run up, grassy turns up down and around the par-tay pavilion while Bavarian music serenades you. Watch out for the H2O Overdrive sand pit, the Kool N Fit bridge, the Planet Bike twisty tree section and the Fluid Double Barriers this time at the NORTH shore of Puddingstone Reservoir. For Sunday, the course will run in reverse with some minor course adjustments to help it flow.

Hope to see you there! More info at: www.SoCalCross.org

My brand new SDG I-Beam Saddle

IMG00359-20091004-1650IMG00358-20091004-1649

After my crash last week I sent a note out to my friends at SDG USA asking for some help with a new saddle. They came through with a white Formula FX!

If you’ve never seen the I-Beam before it’s worth checking out. It’s allows for more position options than any other set-up on the market.

FormulaFX-wht-gry-800px

What is the Formula FX?
Designed from the ground up, the Formula FX (Flex Technology) is the newest edition to the I-Beam family. This saddle encompasses the SDG philosophy, in the form of function and design. Using the latest injection technology, along with assistance from top engineers and world class athletes alike, SDG USA is proud to introduce the long awaited flagship saddle. The Formula FX is the Bel-Air of yesteryear, comprised with EVA foams, DuPont nylon fiber composites, D2 side densities and leather covers – all characteristics that address comfort, durability, weight and style. The Formula FX is ideal for serious XC, All Mountain and Road enthusiasts. (285mm x 145mm)

If you’re in the market for a new seat of post, SDG is worth the time to research. The best part about it is I’m capable of installing it myself, its dummy proof.

INSIDE: TREK BICYCLES

My buddy Tyler found a great write-up on Trek Bikes on a blog called LimitedHype.com. They toured the factory and took a bunch of pictures. The pictures and are stunning.

We recently made it down to Waterloo, Wisconsin to Trek Bicycles to begin our bike collaboration and while there, we got a firsthand look at Trek’s inner workings. Everything from the design studio to Project One to the manufacturing floor was at the mercy of our camera. While we couldn’t show you everything, here’s a look at what went down and what we saw on day one. There will be more developments on our collaboration in the coming weeks.
