Day One, Saturday November 7, 2009
The fall foliage of Bakersfield’s (Bako) Hart Park was home to Southern California Prestige Series (SCPS) races #9A and B. The course had a fast design but mixed in lots of loose dirt turns with a back breaker hill climb, a 50-yard climb that gets gradually steeper to the top. While most riders tend to run the climb those that did push their pedals up the painful jaunt gained ground in their races.
From early morning Juniors, Masters, to Elite riders everyone was loving the course and the mild temperatures Bako had to offer.
Elite women:
The rising star Coryn Rivera (Proman) was back to take on Kendall Ryan (Team SoCalCross/CICLE) as the two young Southern California starlets of cycling have duked it out many times before. It was the two young ladies from the start who set the pace for the field with Dorothy Wong and Alexis Ryan of Team SoCalCross/CICLE in tow. But, after a couple laps it looked like Kendall and Rivera were definitely going to change the race as they gapped the group. In the end it was Rivera who was able to sneak past Kendall Ryan for the win. In third it was series leader Dorothy Wong and Alexis Ryan in fourth.
Elite men:
The fast road start was taken by John Behrens (Bailey Bikes) who lead the field with Gary Douville (Team Platinum) in second as the two set a fast pace for the field. Series leader Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific/B&L) was close behind as he sat with Pioneer Racing’s Jason First as the two rode third and fourth for the first two laps together. It was not until the third lap when Prenzlow made a move to take the lead. He looked strong holding his lead with a chase group of four riders close behind. Then an unfortunate flat sent Prenzlow running to the pits. This allowed the group to monopolize and John Bailey (Bailey Bikes) took the lead. It was close as the group rode together coming into the final time up the hill climb/run up. Douville lead into the bottom, but Prenzlow made a pass halfway up and rode over the top opening up a small gap. As it played out it was Prenzlow who was able to hang on for an exciting win with Douville a close second, First third, and Bailey fourth. Jason Siegle (Bike Religion) rounded out the top five.

Day two, Sunday November 8, 2009
The turnout seemed to double on day two as Hart Park was filled with more riders and spectators to take on the Bako course. It was a great course on day one but the backwards route of day two offered new challenges that people thought would save their legs, wrong! While the back breaker climb from day one was eliminated the backwards route of day two brought a technically fast little dirt climb, two dismounts, and a long snaking climb through the grass which was a leg blaster by the top of the climb where riders were happy to exit onto the pavement for a small descent and long flat return to the main race venue.
The morning races were great again, especially with the increase in racers and spectators. But, watch out people the juniors are coming! In the men’s 3-4 it was 16-year-old junior Peter Morris (Bike Religion) who took the win with an amazing strike. He had smooth lines and kept a fast pace all race to ride in for his first big win. Also, 15-year-old Hanah Rey Sinchamp (Team SoCalCross/CICLE) won the women’s 3-4.
Elite women:
Rivera skipped town and Kendall Ryan took advantage of the day to get her win. The ladies of Team SoCalCross/CICLE looked good again as they rode in one, two, three. It was Wong from the start but eventually Kendall Ryan broke away to take the win. It was Wong in second with Alexis Ryan in third.
Elite men:
It was another super exciting race in the elite men’s field this week. Chance (Calgiant Berry) and Mark Noble (Nonstopciclismo) were back in the field after missing some races due to injuries and illness. Plus, Mountain Biker Sid Taberlay was back to find a win after a few races finishing behind series leader Brent Prenzlow.
The race started with a fast sprint but a hard left turn put riders quickly in line to get through the loose single-tracked tree section which spaced the group almost immediately. It was Sid Taberlay (Sho-Air) and Gary Douville (team Platinum) who took the early lead with a strong group of riders behind including Mark Noble and Prenzlow. Halfway through the lap the riders came off pavement and had to negotiate a 90-degree left hand turn over a curb with a 3-foot drop onto grass. Taberlay and Douville smoothly bunny hopped the curb-drop and opened up a gap while the rest of the field were dismounting and running. The two worked together to form a nice lead over the next couple of laps while a 5-man chase group formed led by Prenzlow and Chance Noble with John Bailey, Jason First, and Mark Noble in tow. The lead duo increased their lead to 50 seconds and it was apparent the chase was racing for 3rd. With 2 laps to go, Chance Noble made his move bunny hoping the curb drop and attacking. Prenzlow tried to chase, but Mark Noble came around before the tight singletrack turns through the trees and slowed the group down allowing the gap to grow. Up front, Taberlay and Douville hit the final pavement stretch together, but Taberlay was the strongest taking the sprint victory. In the chase, Prenzlow eventually got around Mark Noble, but it was a little too late as Chance rolled in for third place and then Mark out-sprinted Prenzlow for 4th with Jason First in 5th.
There are eight weeks of CX down and five more Prestige Series races to go, including next weekend especially made for those of you in the 10% club or want to be. As SoCal Crossers head to SFO to challenge Nor Cal and the Bay Area Prestige Series’ Night Race Saturday, Nov 14th and return down the coast to SLO for Dog Gone Cross, Sunday, Nov 15th, also race #10 of the SoCalCross Prestige Series.
