Big Ride, Big Pain, Problems

The goal for the day was a nice long mountain ride we expected to take about 3.5hours. You can see the general route Trabuco-Bell Ridge here: http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=1143
We started in Mission Viejo, CA climbing through O’neil Park for a small trail ride en route to Holly Jim Canyon and the start of the Trabuco trail.

The route was good until we were about 2 miles up the Trabuco trail when we had the first flat tire. At this same time I noticed my rear tire going low but we continued on. About another mile I started with the first of 10-20 stops where I added more air to my tire. Finally, we reached the top of Trabuco and hiked up to the Los Pinos log book to sign it. Then we found our way down what I thought was the Bell Ridge trail. The first few miles were insane, steep and fun. Unfortunately, it was not long after when the steep trails and conditions took a toll on my bike when the rear rotor ripped off the hub. It was crazy! Never seen this happen before.

This was the point of problems that brought the pain. From here I continued down with a somewhat repaired rotor that had two bolts attaching it to the wheel. So, I basically was using the front brake and hiking most the steep sections (probably safer for me anyways). By the bottom we realized the trail was not heading into the right area and we were in the canyon we started in. We time trialed out of the canyon to get the ride over with but my rear brake was half way closed so I was doing double the work to roll on top of the fact that I was running about 15PSI in my rear tire.

We finally made it back, exhausted, beat up, with some broken junk and now what seems to be poison oak on my arms.

It was awesome!

Two great runs out in the university fields. Amazing place. Just miles and miles of dirt with orchards, plants and event a great municipal airport. It comes with our recommendation.

Get out there this week and grab a motor tabs to keep you out there longer. Today we have rain but I will be hitting the eucalyptus trail before the end of the college basketball season starts up tonight.

Running the Leadville 100 from Scratch

Leadville from Scratch From zero to 100 in a year
By Dougald MacDonald

I began to take my running seriously in August 2004, when I resolved to run Colorado’s Leadville Trail 100 exactly one year later. Until then, running meant neighborhood jogs with my golden retriever. I had never run a race longer than five miles. My zero-to-100 plan didn’t quite pan out-I injured a calf muscle partway through the race and ground to a halt after 86.5 miles and 26 hours. But I did manage to complete three trail ultras during my first year of running, and I learned valuable lessons for anyone breaking into long trail races-lessons I’ll heed when I return to Leadville.
