Bike Jacking in Long Beach/Lakewood

I received this email earlier today from one of the road cycling lists I’m on. What the heck!

——————————
Friday June 6, 2008. I was jumped by a gang member on the San Gabriel River bike trail, it was around 7:15pm with sun still up. I was on the East side going North in the underpass at Carson St. near El Dorado Park and the Long Beach TownCenter. It is narrow through there and he push me down as I road by him going around 18 mph. I went down, hit my head but the helmet saved me big time. He got on top of me and went through my jersey pockets and took my wallet and punched me in the helmet a few times because I didn’t have a cell phone. He got up and grabbed my Eddy Merckx so I got up and walked toward him, yelling at him to leave the bike and then a mountain biker coming South showed up and I yelled to him that I was mugged and my bike was being stolen.

This great guy on the mountain bike stared him down and told him to leave the bike and he did! The mugger ran away North up the trail. More people showed up and we got a call to 911 with a cellphone. After being transfered 3 times, LA Sherrif’s that work Lakewood area showed up and also a helicopter. With the help of other bikers, runners and walkers who showed up, the mugger was spotted in the area of the Lakewood Equestrian Center and he was caught! With statements made, my wallet was returned to me. My forehead is bruised from the helmet impact and my neck is pretty jacked but could have been much worse. All I can say is, if someone looks suspicious on the trail, better to play it safe.

Kauai trip photo album

Great vacation. My highlights were the countless hours of hanging with Carter at the pool and watching him touch his first fish. Road riding was pretty dang cool also.

Welcome Fluid Recovery Products to the team!

It’s with great excitement that we welcome Fluid Recovery Products to the Outside All Day team. The guys at Fluid are sharp and their products are first class. It’s a partnership that Dave and I are super excited about.

Support our newest sponsor and check out their products and website.

As I wrote this post I realized how many dope sponsors we now have on board. With Bonk Breaker, Motor Tabs and Fluid you have the nutrition trio for all workouts and races. Breakaway Training offers the best training services on the planet for cycling and triathlon and Rock N Road has been my local bike shop for 5 years. It all kind of gives me a warm fuzzy.

3 questions with Greg Sellers of Motor Tabs

Outside All Day has some of the coolest sponsors you can imagine. Motor Tabs, Fluid Recovery Products, Rock N Road Cyclery, Bonk Breaker and Breakaway Training. At the top of each of these organizations is a man or woman that is passionate about their business and the people using their products.

The interview below is the first of many I’ll be doing with the top dogs of our site sponsors. It’s my hope that you’ll fall in love with these brands like I have. I use EACH AND EVERY PRODUCT/SERVICE from each of our sponsors everyday in my training and daily life. We need to support our local shops and niche products because it’s the only way to encourage innovation.

1. The Sports Drink landscape is crowded. Aren’t there plenty of options already?

We realized that there was a gap between the leading powdered sports drinks and the ready-to-drink sports drinks. Neither of those delivery systems are portable. We opted to use an effervescent tablet delivery system to bring the only true sports drink tablet in the American sports nutrition realm to market. Athletes can always find water – it’s so simple when out training or traveling, there is no guesswork or confusion, just find water and drop a tablet in, it dissolves and you drink it!

Thus far, consumers are embracing the premise.

2. How did you arrive at the formula?

We wanted to develop a basic sports drink tablet, that utilized only the essentials: sodium/potassium/carbohydrate, no other gimmicks or gadgets – just the basics. Research is clear that sodium and potassium are required to replenish your body when it sweats, we brought in several experts in the sports nutrition field: Rick Kitisin, who is a leading food scientist (he formulated the original MET-Rx drink mix), Jose Antonio, PhD, Ronald Mendel, PhD, both well respected sports nutritionists, as well as the expert product development team from our manufacturing facility. It was a grueling two-year process, but we finally hit it and arrived at our current formulation.

Since our product has about half the sugar/carbs as other leading sports drinks and does not contain artificial sweetener, Motor Tabs has a very light taste – not too sweet, even with two tablets in a 20oz. bottle the flavor is not over powering but very refreshing.

3. Who’s using the product?

Several top athletes and many more amateurs have joined our family: Michellie Jones, who’s one of the globe’s winningest triathletes (06 Kona champion and 2000 Silver Medalist in Olympic games), first tested the tabs back in June of 2005. She instantly embraced our brand and she relied on Motor Tabs for the first time in Kona 05, where she claimed a very respectable 2nd place. She followed up with a victory in 06! Last year didn’t work out too well for MJ, with a nagging foot injury and a punctured ear drum – just wasn’t her year! She’s a champion and a phenomenal brand evangelist for us.

Cheerwine Women’s Cycling team, Spencer Smith (world champion triathlete), motocross legend Micky Dymond is using the tabs now for his Supermoto career. We also have over 900 sponsored athletes on Sponsorhouse.com. We also have an Olympic kayaker from the UK, Paul W and more recently many hard working Americans are embracing the tabs while working outdoors to replenish the fluids they lose during tough, physical work.

Road riding in Kauai is like sleeping in heaven

Thus far the trip to Kauai has been fantastic. Most of my time has been spent chasing Carter around the pool and eating Maui Onion Chips but on 2 of the mornings Julie has given me a pass to do a little road riding. On Tuesday Alison, Alex and I (Julie cannot ride because she’s 7 months prego) rented bikes from Kauai Cycle.

Tuesday – Day 1 (Kapaa to Princeville out and back) -

This was the prettiest ride I will probably ever do in my entire life. We hugged the coast for 19 of the 30 miles and it rained a beautiful rain for 5 minutes. It was a combo of rolling hills, flat and fun fast descents. Super fun to hang out with Allison and Alex. They killed it!

We had to represent our Rock N Road peeps back home!

Over night I kept my bike and had to store it so Carter wouldn’t jack with it.

Wednesday – Day 2 (Poipu to Kapaa) –

This morning I road by myself and knocked out 22 more miles. During the ride it rained 3 different times for approximately 15 minutes. I usually hate riding in the rain but today was different. In a weird way the rain gave me energy and made me feel fresh like Dave after he shaves his legs. My goal was to ride from the hotel to the bike shop in 2 hours and ended up making it in 90 minutes. Then Alex picked me up and I bought him a Starbuck’s. This ride had slightly more climbing than the day before but also some longer down hill sections. I really want to bring my bike the next time I’m over here.

52 miles ain’t to bad for an old man on vacation! Not old like Sheek or Sellers old, but old like 28 old. Watch out for chickens and roosters on the road, they don’t move…seriously, they don’t move.

In my other life

Last night I had an incredible dream. My life is still the same (married to Julie and still have 2 year old son Carter) but instead of the job I have today I’m a professional cyclist on Slipstream/Chipotle and our team just won the 2008 Tour de France. I wasn’t the “man” on the team but I did play a crucial role the win in the mountain stages. Christian Vande Velde took it home for us.

My dream then jumped to vacation in Kauai and the call I received from George Hincapie to do some morning training rides around the island. Turns out both of us were on vacation in the same place at the same time. George and I would take turns pulling and pushing each other. At the end of the week he told me he was impressed with my ability and thought I would be a star in the future. Zabriskie showed up at some point and was chillin with us to.

Thanks for being my buddy George.

Plantar fasciitis cure…I hope

A sweet girl named Christine Appell sent me an email on how she took Plantar Fasciitis head on! My next step is to set-up another appointment with my doctor and request an x-ray. It’s amazing what not running has done physically and mentally. Going on 65 days now.

————————————
Hi Andy,

This is Dave’s friend, he told me you are plagued with Plantar Fasciitis. I am sorry to say that it is the worst injury I’ve had but there are many remedies. Listed below is what worked best to didn’t work. I’m back now running injury free.

1. Getting pregnant (which obviously won’t work for you)

2. Time off and weight training (many calf raises, achilles/calf stretching, foot exercises)

3. Walking boot (wore for 3 months)

4. Night splint/boot (worked at first but not for the long haul)

5. $200 customized orthotics (eased pain but no cure)

6. Cortisone shot (cured me for a day, so useless)

7. High doses of Ibuprofen (allowed me to run longer, which made me more injured but got me through the race I trained for)

I suggest getting a walking boot and weight training. When you do return to running chose soft even surfaces. It is a long process but you will be able to run pain free again and actually enjoy it. I did take over a year which sucks but it does go by fast. The faster you do the right treatment, the less time it will be.

Helmet cam session

My brother-in-law and I decided to rock a little MTB session while hanging in Kauai. We rented some bikes from Kauai Cycles and I strapped on the helmet camera and followed Alex down one of the nuttiest lines I’ve ever ridden. This was our first time riding the line and I’m pretty impressed with myself.

The next time I come over I will ship my road bike. I would guess it is in the $100 range. I’m going crazy not riding and their the roads out here are empty.

A big shout out to Melissa from Coconut Coasters in Kapaa. Their new shop looks fantastic!

Mahalo! We are off to the Spouting Horn with the family.

FYI – This post was a lie. I’ve never caught air on my bike ever. I’m way to old and scared. My other brother-in-law Bryan sent me this video and I posted it on YouTube for all to enjoy.

2008 Summer Olympics coverage through NBC

While watching Carter today I saw a commercial on NBC for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. From what I can tell NBC is the main provider of coverage and they have some large plans. Every single event will be covered by one of their 7 content distribution channels – digital cable, internet archive or live streaming. If they can pull this off it will be an incredible opportunity to watch some of the smaller more niche sports and have access to all of the cycling and triathlon that one can eat!

A few helpful websites:
http://en.beijing2008.cn (official Beijing website)
http://www.nbcolympics.com (NBC Olympics website)

Click here for a complete listing of all of the sports and how there going to be covered. I heard their is still a chance Sheek will be able to land a spot on the cycling squad. Let’s hope it passes his doping tests!
