Ex-mountain bike champ Melissa Giove hit with drug charge

Boston Herald
WILTON, New York — Former mountain biking world champion Melissa “Missy” Giove was in custody Thursday on federal drug charges after authorities said they seized more than 200 pounds of marijuana from a truck she was driving in upstate New York.

U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration officials said Wednesday that the 37-year-old Giove and 30-year-old Eric Canori of Wilton were charged Tuesday with conspiring to possess and distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana.

Authorities said they seized nearly 400 pounds of pot from the truck and from Canori’s home outside Saratoga Springs, 25 miles north of Albany.

Giove and Canori were in the custody of U.S. Marshals pending detention hearings Thursday afternoon in Albany.

DEA spokeswoman Erin Mulvey said authorities learned of Giove and Canori’s plans last weekend when Illinois State Police pulled over a woman driving a truck and trailer loaded with about 220 pounds of marijuana. Authorities completed the delivery to the Albany area, where Mulvey said Giove picked up the vehicle and trailer.

Officials said Giove then drove north and followed Canori to his home, where some of the trailer’s contents were unloaded.

Giove was later arrested at nearby Saratoga Lake, authorities said. A search of Canori’s home turned up more than 150 pounds of pot and more than $1 million in cash stashed in a closet and the basement, the DEA said.

It couldn’t be immediately determined Thursday morning if Giove and Canori had lawyers.

Giove, nicknamed “The Missile” for her aggressive riding style, was the downhill world champion in 1994 and won World Cup season titles in ’97 and ’98, then captured national titles from 1999-2001. One of the sport’s first mainstream female stars, she retired from downhill racing in 2003.

Loney Dear

We all find ourselves scouring our collection of iTunes music for training music. Before my last half-marathon I carefully chose just enough music to finish without hearing one song twice. I timed it just so I would make my goal. As the race came to a close (iPods were legal) I picked up the pace as the final song came on. Normally I would have waited much later to pick up the pace for the final sprint – but the song urged me on. And so I only heard the first few seconds of the first song. Mission accomplished.

Finding the right music takes a little time. Our buddy Fitz Cahall over at The Dirtbag Diaries has sweet music on his site and I from time to time grab it and go.

My latest find from KCRW in LA is Loney Dear. The lead is Emil Svanangen an ex-pro cyclist. Spin Magazine says of Loney Dear, “Despair has never sounded so sweet.” But I beg to differ. There have been a few long climbs I have made where I could have used his music. Check them out on their site and their myspace page.

The National Parks – a film by Ken Burns

The new Ken Burns film is coming to PBS September 27, 2009

Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature’s most spectacular locales — from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska — The National Parks: America’s Best Idea is nonetheless a story of people: people from every conceivable background — rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs; people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy. It is a story full of struggle and conflict, high ideals and crass opportunism, stirring adventure and enduring inspiration – set against the most breathtaking backdrops imaginable.

The National Parks: America’s Best Idea is a six-episode series directed by Ken Burns and written and co-produced by Dayton Duncan.

At 3:50 on Monday, June 15th, the Budget Conference Committee voted in favor of an alternative to Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposal to present to the California State Legislature. While the Governor proposed withdrawing all General Fund support and closing 220 state parks, the committee today voted in favor of an alternative that would purportedly keep all California State Parks open.

The committee’s alternative proposal is to impose a $15 fee per registered vehichle to fund California State Parks. Those driving California registered vehicles would then be given free day use of all California State Parks.

Rock N’ Road Cyclery

It was close to 6 on Friday afternoon and I was heading from San Diego to LA. My Specialized Epic needed a little attention. I decided to make a stop at the Irvine Rock store and hope they might have time in the next week to adjust the shifting, check the brakes and the shocks. I pushed the bike into the store and I was met by a mechanic. He grabbed the bike and said – do you have 15 minutes? Surprised, I blurted yes.
Soon I was driving home with a race ready bike. Being that I bought my bike at RN’R I owed nothing.
Thanks.

Rock N’ Road Named Top 100 Bicycle Retailer 5th Straight Year

It’s always fun to see Rock N Road Cyclery be successful. Congrats to Matt Ford and team…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bicycle Mag Names Top Bike Shops In America – OC’s Rock N’ Road Named Top 100 Bicycle Retailer for 5th Straight Year

The bicycle industry leadership has determined what Rock N’ Road Cyclery’s customers already knew … Rock N’ Road excels in “market share, community outreach, and store appearance.” What made reaching the Bicycle Retailer and Industry News Top 100 Retailers of 2009 especially satisfying was that Rock N’ Road was one of only 37 bike shops in America to reach the Top 100 five years in a row.

Yahoo reviewer Dwainew says it this way, ” These guys ROCK!: I’ve NEVER been denied help by these guys when in need. They do get back-logged for detailed work, like everybody else, but here you’ll find friendly, helpful people that want to help you! If it’s a quick fix, they’ll probably do it right there for you!”

Way to go guys, you have always treated your customers the best!

Short track racing at New Belgium

I forgot to mention in my wrap-up from Sunday that 2 weeks back I hit up the last race in the New Belgium Short Track Series. My category did 4 laps, each lap was around 5.5 minutes long, the videos below show the course well. My average heart rate over the 25 minutes was 186, for me, that’s going hard. Ended up getting 4th place out of 22 dudes. As you can see I’m sportin my new Velo-One Team Kit. It’s a fun social team and I really enjoy the other riders. I’ll always miss my Rock N Road team though. We heard rumor that they have a cross series in the fall, that would rock!

While at the race I fell in love with an MTB glove vendor, Jett MTB. Hooked myself up with a pimpin pair of white gloves. The only problem with white is that my orange Motor Tabs are dying them a little. Oh well, they still look hot! I know Sellers will be jealous when he sees them.
