CrossFit Endurance and Brian Mackenzie on the cover of Competitor Magazine

For the last 18 months I’ve been fascinated with CrossFit and CrossFit Endurance. Brian Mackenzie, the founder of CrossFit Endurance challenges conventional training methods and you either love him or hate him. As I read more, train more, I really think Brian may be on to something huge. His ideas and style have impacted me so positively.

Look inside this issue.

The cover article focuses on Brian and what he has to say about training. I HIGHLY recommending picking up a free copy of Competitor Magazine at your local running/bike shop or reading it for free online using the link above.

Happy Sunday!

Race report: Wyoming Trail Marathon

Well, the Wyoming Trail Marathon was a success. The day was cold, windy, wet and muddy. We didn’t have rain during the race but we had drizzle and ran thru a cloud the entire time. Due to life, my longest run leading up to the race was 12 miles, combo that with a lot of tempo treadmill runs and semi-consistent Emerfit workouts and I had an ok base. The first 13 miles felt strong, the turn around was up a LONG hill so I slowed down. Felt great on miles 20 – 24 and felt SLAMMED running up what felt like Mt. Everest for the last 2 miles.

My race time will end up being 5:01 for the marathon and 2:03 for Jobe on the half. Not sure what place either of us got yet, I don’t really care either. We are both very pleased considering the conditions and how crazy life is.

Jobe and I had to represent our peeps at Emerfit. We couldn’t be successful without them!

Other thank you’s to Cytomax, Honey Stinger, Fluid Recovery and the wife.

Next up is the Big Horn 50k in June. The race is in Sheridan, WY and is supposed to be very beautiful.

Happy Memorial Day, I’m off to see Kung Fu Panda 2 with the two punks (Carter and Landon).

Tminus 21 hours until the first trail marathon of the year

I’m on an antibiotic, Carter and Landon are sick, work is MADNESS, there’s a 70% chance of rain tomorrow and I haven’t run in 6 days. Hmmmmm…

Jobe and I head up to Laramie, WY tomorrow morning, leaving at 3:45 am to tackle the Wyoming Trail Marathon. Race starts at 8,700 ft and with the rain, there may just be snow.

Today will be spent mowing the lawn and drinking as much water as I can. Goal time is 5 hours. Feels realistic but I don’t know at this point. The course is super hilly and rolling but not steep. This is good and bad for me. I’m more used to training with steep hills which translates to more hiking.

COURSE: Hilly out and back on mostly dirt and gravel roads (100% for the Half and 77% for the Marathon) in Medicine Bow National Forest. Begins at 8,700 feet and drops to 8,000 feet at the turn around. Weather is variable. Temperature is 40-60 degrees.

Wish me luck!

My moon shoes are amazing – The Hoka One One

After being diagnosed with plantar fasciitis I just about gave up on running altogether. About 4 weeks ago I started running in a pair of Hoka trail running shoes. It would be irresponsible to say the Hoka running shoe is perfect shoe for every trail condition or foot type but I can attest that since I started wearing them I’ve been able roll over stuff that would have killed me before. I guess it’s like going from a hard-tail to a full suspension mountain bike – it’s time to get a new bike.

Sick last week and excited about this week

Last week was a major bummer with a head cold that took me out. Compound a cold with traveling for work on Friday and Saturday and you have a zero training week. This week WILL be different.

Monday -
4 mile treadmill run
Tuesday - CrossFit at Emergent Fitness
Wednesday – Short run with Jobe at Devil’s Backbone
Thursday - Long run up Round Mountain for 2.5 hours or so after work.
Friday - CrossFit at Emergent Fitness
Saturday - MTB ride in Lory State Park with Matt Smart
Sunday - Long run at Bobcat with Matt Smart

The Wyoming Trail Marathon is on May 29. Normally I wouldn’t be nervous but based on my past week’s of training I really am a little concerned.

Need to have a few good weeks of consistency…

The North Face Endurance Challenge in San Fransisco

The North Face Endurance Challenge Championship – GORE-TEX 50 Mile
San Francisco, CA
December 3-4, 2011

Situated in the visually stunning Marin Headlands just north of the city, The North Face Endurance Challenge Championship course has surprised runners with both its scenery and amount of elevation change. Participants are encouraged to train for repeated uphills and downhills of several hundred feet at a time. A majority of the course covers run-able fire road (very little technical single track) overlooking the Pacific Ocean with occasional glimpses of the Golden Gate Bridge.

More info at: http://www2.thenorthface.com/endurancechallenge/

I’m seriously considering this race to finish out the 2011 running season. The Steamboat 50 is on September 17. Tackling this race forces me to stay in running shape for October and November, which would be a good thing. I figure between Emergent Fitness, the treadmill and warm GoLite jackets I can make training happen in the late fall. For some reason, this race just looks unreal, I’m pretty sure I need to do it. The 50 mile race has a 14 hour cut off, which is reasonable, if I stay focused on training, I hopeful I could make this happen.

Here’s to not being fat in the fall!

Pursuing Fitness

Last summer, Andy B convinced me to join a gym in Fort Collins called Emerfit, and I think it’s changing my life.  When you think of the gym, you probably think of treadmills, mirrors, and awkward old dudes in spandex maxing out on the bench press.  Emerfit is probably unlike any gym you’ve been to.

I spent a lot of my life immersed in sport specific weight and agility training, which progressively got more difficult and had a competitive element.   However, I found that this type of training was hard for me to find in a local “big gym.”

When I first sat down with Chris Brown at Emerfit, he explained to me the model of fitness they followed.  What is fitness?  How do you know if you’re fit, or if someone else is physically fit?  It’s something that humans have spent at least the last century trying to figure out, debating, researching, and citing medical journals and studies.  An easy way for me to understand the Emerfit model is this – you may have a guy who can bench 500 lbs, but would fall over dead running more than 400 meters.  You also may have a guy that places top ten in the Boston Marathon, but has to have help out of the

Workout of the Day

grocery store because he can’t lift his milk jugs into the minivan.  Emerfit is all about the pursuit of overall fitness.  It’s not about how you look. It’s not about how much weight you can lift, or how far or fast you can run.  It’s about you pushing the envelope of fitness for you. For me, I had done some short distance running, and a little trail running. I didn’t have any really specific goals in mind when I started, but I have fairly chronic disc issues in my lower back, and feared my body was slipping rapidly into the middle-age abyss.   I, like most people, had tried lots of programs, and gyms, but ultimately faded away once the new wore off.

So what do you do at Emerfit?

Each class is scheduled for an hour with a trainer assigned to lead the group and provide individual coaching. You start with some stretching, warm-up, and then move into some strength work. Each day you also do a “Workout of the Day” (WOD) for conditioning.  The WOD is a short, intense, competitive, timed workout that is designed to push the edge of your fitness limits.  Most of the class participates in the WOD, and results are posted on the board.  This adds a level of competitiveness and accountability that makes me push way harder than I would otherwise. There is a ton of thought and effort put into the programming of these workouts, by the certified training staff.  They also have some customized strength regiments, a climbing-specific program, nutritional coaching, and much more.

Craig D - Deadlift

In 8 months, I’ve seen significant improvements in my strength, speed, and endurance.  I feel better.  I’m accomplishing personal and professional goals, and my cholesterol and blood sugar have moved from high-risk to healthy levels.  I’m running my first trail half marathon on May 29th (Wyoming Trail Marathon).   There are a number of reasons why the Emerfit model has worked for me, more on that in the next post.

Aspen, CO – For many this will be the most challenging marathon they have “never” run. Why? Because it’s NEW! The inaugural Aspen Backcountry Marathon will be making its debut on August 27, 2011 and will showcase some of Aspen’s most coveted trails while challenging even the well trained athletes.

“Aspen has great triathlons, half marathons, and 5ks,” said Special Events Coordinator Sandra Doebler. “but the one race we were missing was a marathon.” And this marathon is no exception. This scenic and anything but flat course (over 4000 feet in elevation gain!) gives runners a taste of the mountains and showcases the spectacular scenery of Aspen.

Marathon Route (portions of the race are subject to change)
• Start & finish in downtown Aspen at Wagner Park
• From Wagner Park, up Smuggler & into Hunter Creek
• Up into the Four Corners area via Van Horn Park & Hobbit Trail
• Across & down Sunnyside (Aspen City Limits)
• Down Sunnyside to the Rio Grande Trail and Stein Park
• Up Cemetery Lane, around the Aspen Golf Course via Homestake Road
• Down into the Maroon Creek Valley
• Out of Maroon Creek Valley by Tiehack
• Up Buttermilk via the Government Trail
• Returning to Tiehack via the Oregon Trail (Aspen City Limits – in town)
• Crossing the Tiehack bridge and onto the Moore Open Space
• Cross the Marolt Bridge and down Hopkins Avenue
• Into Koch Lumber Park via the Midland Trail
• Cross Aspen Mountain via the AJAX Trail
• AJAX Trail to Ute Avenue
• Back into downtown Aspen (Wagner Park)

The Aspen Backcountry Marathon takes place in conjunction with the Aspen Skiing Company’s Power of Four Mountain Bike Race taking place Sunday, August 28. The Power of Four’s unique course will require participants to conquer pieces of Aspen’s 4 Mountains – Aspen, Snowmass, Buttermilk and Highlands. A mix of terrain covering over 10,000 feet of climbing will make this race epic.

Just added to my race calendar: The Aspen Backcountry Marathon

This morning as I was reading an email from Trail Runner Magazine I stumbled across an ad for the The Aspen Backcountry Marathon. After clicking thru to their site and seeing the August 27, 2011 race date, I knew this race was going to be perfect for my schedule. I’ve needed a longer distance race for August as prep for the Steamboat 50 in September. It’s their inaugural year and the course looks super challenging.

My birthday is on August 22 and my son Landon’s is on the 24, why not make it a fun birthday weekend. My wife Julie is in so it’s on!

So as of today, the schedule stands as is:
Wyoming Trail Marathon – May 29, 2011
Big Horn 50k – June 18, 2011
Leadville Silver Rush 50-Mile Trail Run Race – July 17, 2011
Aspen Backcountry Marathon – August 27, 2011
Steamboat 50-Mile Trail Race – September 17, 2011

I love finding races in new places that we don’t get to go that often. The Aspen Backcountry Marathon will be perfect! I’m already looking forward to dipping in the hot springs at Glenwood Springs Hot Springs!

Fun stuff!

Cytomax and heaven

As most know, Greg Sellers of MotorTabs fame is now the Brand Manager for Cytomax. Long before I used MotorTabs, Cytomax was my drink of choice. It’s got a great taste and has proven science behind it. Tropical Fruit is probably my favorite flavor of all time. I’ve used the product several times this week already, Emergent Fitness, 2 trail runs, snowshoeing, etc.

More info on Cytomax: www.cytosport.com

It’s a privilege to be partnering with a brand like this. Greg is a great friend and I’m excited to help him spread the word on Cytomax.

First “Long” Training Run

Saturday morning, Andy B and I hit the trail at about 8 o’clock.  I had not eaten properly, had not gotten enough sleep the night before, and was dehydrated.  Not a good start.  But Fort Collins is a great place to be, if you love being outside (and you know we do.)  It took a few minutes, but I was up to speed after about 15 minutes.  We started with a long steady climb for about 45 minutes, with lots of switchbacks and timber. We broke out of the trees, and the view of Horsetooth Reservoir made the climb worth it. It was a great way to start a Saturday morning!

Single Track in Lory State Park

This was a perfect longer trail run, my first of the season, and good initial prep for the Medicine Bow Half.

This week’s training included:

Tuesday @ Emerfit - (500 m row + 15 Ball Slams) X 4 Sets

Wednesday – 6 Mile trail run on Devil’s Backbone

Thursday @ Emerfit – 50 “Man Makers” (Push up, DB squat clean, push press 35 lbs) for time

Saturday – 9.58 Miles in Lory

Sunday – Intervals at CSU track

A Rookie Trains for a Half Marathon

So, with some amount of hesitation I have put my hat in the ring for my first half marathon.  I’m a former collegiate athlete who has since taken a leave of absence from physical activity of virtually all types.  But, thanks to Andy, I’ve been pursuing fitness in a few creative ways over the last 6 months, including Emerfit and moderate trail running.   Recently though, I started to notice that my trail running was inconsistent at best.  I’d go out with Andy once every other week and die.  So, I did what anyone who’s never run more than 6 miles at a time in his life would do; I registered for the Medicine Bow Half Marathon, in Wyoming.

Andy will be running the full marathon as shown above.  Luckily, I only have to do half of that.  This race is a “hilly out and back” that starts at 8700 ft.   The temperature is typically between 40 and 60 degrees.  It will be a good test of my ability to train and discipline myself leading up to an event.  I will be posting some of my training regimen throughout the weeks ahead, which will include comments on diet, Emerfit, and hitting the trails around Northern Colorado.

74 days till race day!

A quick Andy update

If you read the blog frequently, you know that it was basically abandoned the last few months. Work and life have been crazy. Even the last 3 weeks have been nuts. I’m in the midst of 12 days of travel for work out of 15 days. Business travel buries me and my eating. Tired and feel fat.

Current stats for 2011:
173 pounds (need to be at 160 by May 29)
Overall eating is horrid
Longest run is around 7 miles this season
Sticking pretty consistent with CrossFit at Emergent Fitness twice a week

The first race of the year is the Wyoming Trail Marathon on May 29. I’m not nervous about my conditioning yet but I will be in 2 – 3 weeks. A super long run planned for next weekend. From there I go right into Big Horn 50k on June 19. Both races are bought and paid for so there is no backing out.

The bottom line is I need to get my act together with…
Eating right
Consistent attendance at Emergent Fitness
Consistent long and short runs

It’s fun to know that Jobe and Mike are in it with me. Looking forward to a fun trail running season, just need to get moving…
