My new ALL cycling Breakaway Training plan

Felipe sent over my ALL cycling, 15 hours a week custom training plan tonight. Recently, Breakaway Training has been working to get me back on track with a pure focus on cycling, no running or dreaded swimming, all bike riding all the time. Receiving the plan is like getting a shot of EPO in my arm, I’m freakin pumped to ride my bike! The entire 6 week plan is already in my Entourage calendar and synced to my phone. I know I’m a crappy age grouper but there’s something about having a professional coach helping you spend your 15 hours a week a little more wisely that exciting. Time is valuable and I want to spend it as strategically as I can to get maximum results.

Felipe’s goal is to have me ready to go by Cyclocross season. The plan is a nice combo of different heart rates zone focuses, road vs. mountain and the time spent in the gym lifting and stretching. I love how perfectly it fits my life. If you’re interested in a plan like mine please take a look at what Breakaway Training has to offer. They have a team of coaches that specialize in all different areas of sport to help you reach your fitness goals.

I’m sick and tired of it!

As I was typing in the upstairs office tonight with my shirt off I got pissed as I looked in the mirror! I’m back up 7 pounds since March 29. The real tipping point came on Saturday during my ride with Greg Sellers. Greg hooked me up with a Motor Tabs team jersey. I love the jersey but I have a nasty case of jersey gap when I wear it, uggh. It’s time to get serious about my weight again. I’m banking on Breakaway Training to get me back down to where I want to be. There’s something about Felipe’s plans that keep me motivated to train.

The plan is lot’s of riding and eating well plus documenting what I eat (food journal). The other essential part of the plan is to train well with the nutrition products I have access to. This will allow my training to be quality. Effective use of Bonk Breakers (pre), Motor Tabs (during) and Fluid Recovery (post) will provide the energy and recovery that’s necessary.

Lastly, I’ve chosen my next race, the Rim Nordic Cross Country #4, Aug. 17, 2008 in Lake Arrowhead, CA. I’ll race beginner and enjoy myself while watching Dave pound out 4 laps and attempting to kill his arch enemies.

It’s on like donkey kong! 5:30 am here I come…

Lame looking socks that you sleep in!

Because plantar fasciitis is still the bain of my existence I’ve had to kick it into high gear to figure out how to recover quicker than I am currently am, which is not recovering. Felipe and I just wrapped our touch base call and he recommended checking out the Strassburg Sock. He’s just a bunch of his athletes in it. The sock is deigned to kick plantar in the butt and to make me look like a moron while I wear it.

Snails Pace has them in stock so the family will head over there after work to grab a pair.

Here’s to lame looking socks that you sleep in!

Back in business

Ok, I’m sick of this! Since March 30 (post foot injury) I’ve felt like a slug. Zero motivation, zero energy, zero effort applied to my training. As of May 3rd, that’s all changing. My next race is the XTERRA West Championship – Temecula on May 18th and I want to do the best I can.

Goals:
1. No soda before May 18
2. Swim practice 3 days a week in May
3. 182 pounds by race day
4. Get back on my Breakaway Training schedule

If all goes according to plan I’ll race well and at full capacity. The question mark is my left foot. I’m now on 4 weeks with no running and the heel is still tender. The heel will be the deciding factor for the quality of my race.

2 long mountain rides planned for this weekend and back in the pool on Monday morning. Looking forward to getting out of my funk and losing my gut!

Palomor kicked me in the butt

In general, I would consider myself a pretty fit guy. While riding with my peeps from Breakaway-Training on Sunday I learned otherwise. The ride today absolutely kicked me in the butt. The bottom line for me was preparation and nutrition but nutrition more than anything. My biggest mistake was leaving my GU and Bonk Breaker in the van when it should have been in the back of my jersey. 45 minutes into the ride my legs felt fine but my head was spinning and I found myself closing my eyes to try to recollect my head. This was 100% related to proper nutrition on the ride but the head trip lasted the entire way up. This effected my performance and that really bums me out. I know I’m stronger than that ride demonstrated but because I wasn’t prepared I have to wait until next time.

Motor Tabs fortunately saved my life. I had 2 bottles with me that lasted until the end of the most grueling climb of my life. Once at the top and after Dave was done making fun of me, I pounded the Bonk Breaker, filled the bottle and headed down the coldest decent ever!

Good day for sure, next time I’ll be more prepared.

FYI – Dave is the fasted human alive. He flew up that mountain!

Fartlek

Coach Felipe from Breakaway Training just sent me over my first 4 week plan. Holy crap I’m pumped, this is my chance to not be fat anymore and maybe be better than Bryan Cass at something! I wasn’t planning on getting up early tomorrow to train but my plan calls for a 90 minute high cadence ride and a 30 minute run. I have to get it all in before work, 6 am, here I come.

While browsing my plan I came across the word “Farklek”. If I was still in junior high (or Dave’s mind) this would still be a fun word. Google is amazing….

Fartlek, which means “speed play” in Swedish, is a form of conditioning which puts stress mainly on the aerobic energy system due to the continuous nature of the exercise. The difference between this type of training and continuous training is that the intensity or speed of the exercise varies, meaning that aerobic and anaerobic systems can be put under stress. Most fartlek sessions last a minimum of 45 minutes and can vary from aerobic walking to anaerobic sprinting. Fartlek training is generally associated with running, but can include almost any kind of exercise.
