This series is a blast, Sheek and I race the Mary Jane Circuit last year and had a ton of fun. You can’t go wrong with anything that has to do with Winter Park.

Boulder Indoor Cycling

I think I may have stumbled upon one of the coolest parts about living in Colorado, indoor bike riding! This week I learned about Boulder Indoor Cycling. The place is complete with an indoor mountain bike park and velodrome. I’m pretty sure this is where Taylor Phinney trains during track season.

Building of the velodrome:

Looking forward to giving it a try when it gets colder.

Athlete Profile – Sam Jurekovic

Athlete Profile – Sam Jurekovic of Team SHO-AIR and Cloudveil.
Jackson native and long time Cloudveil wearer, Sam Jurekovic talks about his life as a professional mountain biker, and his aspirations for wearing some metal around his neck. Sam is also a Team SHO-AIR team rider. They were my local pro team back in So Cal.

I thought his video profile was pretty cool…

A fun article by my buddy Craig DeMartino

My buddy Craig DeMartino is a professional rock climber and super stud mountain biker. Craig and I try to ride after work on our local trails when he’s not jet setting around the country winning climbing events. Because he’s so rad at climbing rocks Cloudveil made him an athlete ambassador. They ask their ambassador’s to blog for them, below is his most recent post, titled Gumbo Ride: Sometimes you’re the bug… It’s about riding on our local trails in Loveland and Fort Collins, CO. If you’ve ever ridden your mountain bike in the rain you know about the “gmubo” and will appreciate his story.

When I was a kid, I loved to play in the mud and rain. Living here in CO I get the chance to plat a lot in the crazy weather that comes through here on a regular basis. Today was no exception. It’s been raining here on and off most of the summer. We are not known for our rain here, so it takes a lot of getting used to. Its messed up my outside climbing, but has made for some fun mountain bike rides. As the rain came down and I suited up to ride, it looked as if it would clear by the time I was on top of the hogbacks behind my house.

A little bit about Craig:

Craig DeMartino
I’ve been a climber most of my life, but in 2002 while climbing with a friend in Rocky Mountain National Park, I was dropped 100 feet due to a miscommunication. The fall resulted in the loss of my right leg, a fused back and numerous other life long injuries. After about two years of rehab, I was back to climbing at about the same levels of pre-accident, and in 2005 became the first amputee to climb El Capitan in under 24 hours. I love to ski and mountain bike with my family when I’m not scaling rocks.

Hopefully Craig won’t be to big time and will actually ride with me this week,

GOOD BUZZ: No more coffee guilt—caffeine boosts leg and brain power.

GOOD BUZZ: No more coffee guilt
By Liz Applegate Ph.D.
From the May 2009 issue of Runner’s World

In a study done last year, researchers gave cyclists an energy bar with or without caffeine (equal to one cup of coffee) before and during a long, hard ride. They found that cyclists who have caffeine ride farther and think faster on cognitive tests than the no-caffeine group—useful news to runners in endurance events and adventure races, where quick decision-making is key.

I wonder if diet Pepsi and chocolate brownies have the same positive benefits?

Chasing

If you happened to pass the Portola Arby’s this morning then surely you would have heard two grown men laughing – all the way up the canyon. At six we dropped into the sand pit called Whiting Ranch and took two laps away from those who were still sleeping. Andy is getting my race tactics in shape for the Tinley Mountain Bike Tri.

I followed him through one lap of the newly minted racetrack and then he called me past him giving me ten yards. He caught me time and time again. But, I rode with reckless abandon. Now you see why we need to wake up so early. We would have bummed out the running crew. And quite frankly with all the mountain lion signs – they have more courage then I do – so we give ourselves a head start.

After two hours we headed over to Tully’s for some quality wakeup drinks. We covered Tour race tactics, OutsideAllDay, and I even got some coaching tips. Andy was in great form today – even at the coffee shop. The 100% compostable coffee cups are sweet.

Why commuting is fun…

I try to ride to work a couple days a week and tonight I was going to meet EC for a little spin through our local ride spot, “The Outer Limits (super easy, fun trails that surround Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa, CA). Then as I am on my way home EC calls with the message to meet him on the trails because he is taking out our buddy Randy and his Rock Hard Mafia (group of guys that are similar to the metal mulisha except they don’t have tattoos and ride dirt bikes. They are a pretty mellow group of skinny surf industry designers/artist that like to jump the cliffs).

At this point I was sprinting to the trails so I could see this mess and hopefully a crash.

Anyway the results were hilarious!
Randy and others bickered and egged each other to keep jumping bigger drops until Randy did a ten foot drop.

Malibu Creek to the Rescue

So a few months ago I was signed up for a Trail run with Andy at Malibu Creek SP. Work called and I got worked. Andy got to have an amazing run around the ruins of the Mash site. This afternoon work had called me up to that part of town and I decided to get some time back. Even though I was super rushed, I found myself climbing up some amazing single track moments away from the car. The freedom of my current schedule totally redeemed itself. And as a tribute to Andy I climbed out of the canyon without getting off my bike on a quad burning single track lung buster. Eagerly awaiting the sunrise for another ride.
