Landis wore a wire, recorded video footage to implicate Michael Ball in doping investigation

Landis wore a wire, recorded video footage to implicate Michael Ball in doping investigation
by Shane Stokes
December 19, 2010

Controversial Rock Racing owner Michael Ball was implicated in doping matters by Floyd Landis, who wore a hidden wire and recorded video footage for federal agents.

According to an unnamed source who spoke to the New York Daily News, Landis filmed what is thought to have been human growth hormone and other doping products in the refrigerator at Ball’s luxury apartment in Marina Del Rey, California. The audio and video data was then used by FDA agent Jeff Novitzky to secure a search warrant, which in turn led to the seizure of banned substances.

Rock Racing’s sponsor in bankruptcy

Rock & Republic, the firm behind the Rock Racing Team, has filed for bankruptcy in US court. Michael Ball is the Chief Executive Officer of the company, as well as of the cycling team. The company has been known for it expensive jeans, at US$200 or more, as well as other apparel. The products were sold at upper-class stores as Bloomingdale’s, Nieman-Marcus and Nordstrom. The company’s day-to-day operations are expected to continue as usual. There was no word as to how the bankruptcy filing might affect the team.

The last I had heard was that Rahsaan Bahati was going to continue to race with Rock Racing in the 2010 season. As of today, it’s confirmed he will be part of the 15 man roster making up the Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling Team. I think it’s cool that Colorado Premier Training will be one of the title sponsors.

Felt-Holowesko’s Alex Howes mashed the cranks solo off the day’s long breakaway to take his first NRC win on the mountaintop finish at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort in the fourth stage of the 2009 Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah on Saturday. Howes attacked out of the waning break, quickly putting ten seconds into the group with 12km remaining in the stage and came through the finish ahead of break-mate Burke Swindlehurst and a surging Francisco Mancebo (Rock Racing).

Hamilton accepts 8-year ban

It is with great sadness we post the following news as it originally appeared on Velo News.com. Outside all day is very fond of Tyler. We have followed his life for many years now and wish him the best.

By Charles Pelkey
Published on Velo News: Jun. 16, 2009
Former Rock Racing rider Tyler Hamilton has accepted an eight-year suspension from sport after a positive doping test earlier this year, his second violation since 2004.

Hamilton could have faced a lifetime ban due to his 2004 suspension for homologous blood doping, a violation first noted by anti-doping officials at that year’s Olympic Games.

Hamilton tested positive for testosterone or its precursors in February. He later acknowledged the positive test, declined to ask for further confirmation of the result and announced publicly that he had taken DHEA as self-medication for depression.

Hamilton’s public admission may have contributed to a lesser penalty, but nevertheless the suspension ensures that he will never again compete at the top levels of the sport.

“In the sport of cycling, eight years’ ineligibility for a 38-year old athlete is effectively a lifetime ban, and an assurance that he is penalized for what would have been the remainder of his competitive cycling career,” said U.S. Anti-Doping Agency CEO Travis Tygart.

Hamilton announced his retirement from cycling on April 19 of this year, when he also confirmed that he had tested positive following the February out-of-competition test.

Hamilton claimed the positive resulted from his recent ingestion of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) a multi-functional steroid he said was in an herbal remedy he took after he had stopped using prescription anti-depressants. USADA officials said they couldn’t confirm that claim, saying only that Hamilton tested positive for testosterone or one of its precursors.

Despite Hamilton’s retirement, USADA retained jurisdiction over the case under the provisions of the World Anti-Doping Code. Article 7.6 of the Code specifically notes that the applicable agency retains jurisdiction in the case until the process is completed, regardless of whether the athlete chooses to leave the sport.

Hamilton’s case was handled in similar fashion to that of Canadian Geneviève Jeanson, who had also retired while facing a lifetime ban for a second doping violation. Jeanson, however, will still be younger than Hamilton is now when she is once again eligible to ride at age 37.

Riding with Austin Carroll of Rock Racing

Two nights ago Julie gave me a pass to go and spin my legs on the road bike. Riding consistency is out but riding when I get the chance is in. I quickly took her up on the offer and headed out after work to meet her in Irvine for some dinner. Cruising along rockin out to my iPod I rolled past a dude dialed in with a Rock Racing kit and bike set-up. I’m intrigued and slowly begin to stock him. If you know me, you know I love the Rock Racing team. He was fixing something on his bike so I waited for him on the path.

As he rolled by I glanced at him like I wanted to talk. He pulled out his ear buds and we proceed to ride together for the next 5 miles. My new BFF is a pro racer by the name of Austin Carroll. In between the awkard moments of me almost crashing and asking prying questions he was truly a super nice dude. I think I was star struck as this was the first pro I had ever met. The conversation was fun, I asked him questions about Rock Racing, Floyd Landis, racing in Europe (he leaves to race on Saturday), training, being a pro, etc. The stuff you want to ask but never get the chance. We have an interview planned for when he returns from Europe.

Check him out at:

Nice guy and he didn’t even mind that I almost made him crash which would ruin the rest of his season.

CRANKSET Exclusive: An Interview With Michael Ball

Ok, so I have to admit, I freakin love Rock Racing. They bring a fresh edge to cycling that is needed if we want to see the sport we love expanded to new audiences. I would hope to see them in the 2010 Tour de France. I’m callin it now. TripleCrankset.com has landed an exclusive interview with team owner Michael Ball.

Whether you would like to admit it or not, Rock Racing has turned the very traditional sport of cycling on its proverbial ear. From their overwhelming presence at races replete with Cadillac Escalades, buses, trailers and a 35 foot rig, to their multiple designed, multi-colored kits, Rock Racing has brought style and sex appeal to the generally reserved sport of cycling. At the epicenter of it all is Michael Ball, CEO and Creative Director of Rock & Republic. The outspoken leader of Rock Racing has brought panache and a no holds bar mentality that has often ruffled the feathers of the cycling community as he tries to shape the sport in his image.

Manhattan Beach Grand Prix highlights

On Sunday I cruised up to the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix. I had never been to a pro road race, I took as many photo’s as I could. Rashaan Bahati took from Rock Racing took the pro race. He was flying down the final straight way lookin super mean!

Click here for final results on the day.

The highlight for me was hanging with Sellers at the Motor Tabs booth and taking to people about his incredible product. The Fluid Recovery booth had lot’s of action also. I love how both of these brands support local cycling!

The race report below if from Travis Wilkerson of Team Sho-Air/Sonance Elite Cycling. Who better to give a report than a guy that was in the race. These dudes showed up big time and were working hard. So fun to see them race as strong as they did.

———————————————————-
This weekend was the infamous Manhattan Beach GP. Always a favorite race of SoCal riders, it is an event everyone wants to win. MBGP is an NRC, and therefore the Elite Team was split up. At NRC races, the pro-1′s race by themselves, giving the cat.2′s their own race as well. We lined up a solid squad for the cat.2 race, and as the prime bell started ringing we started taking laps. There were about 10 primes in all given out in our 60 minute scramble, and we got 5 of them. The last 3 laps, as usual at MB, got a little crazy.

Lots of people bumping and throwing shoulders. At the start of the last lap I had Charon’s wheel and as we hit the hill, we got boxed in. I was yelling at Charon to get us out, and just then, in the turn at the top, some idiot crashed. Sweet, we had our way out. Just then Brian and George came up the left and gave us a free ride to the front. I slotted in about 7th spot as we headed into the bottom turn. Charon was a rider or two behind me, when an over zealous racer decided he could hold 34mph through the outside of that turn. He was wrong in thinking that. He was next to me about a half bike length up and to my left when he hit the deck, almost going under me as he did it. It caused me to tap brakes and loose about 10m to the front runners. I got around a few guys and got up into 6th place. Not the result we were looking for but not terrible either. MBGP is a tough race, and it’s any body’s race out of that last corner.

The pro-1 started right after with Tommy, Kirk, and MJ in there. It was another fast race, and with last year’s winner, Bahati, out there looking to repeat, Rock Racing was going to keep it together. They did and Bahati won, but Tommy got in there and mixed it up at the NRC level coming in 15th place, and only the 3rd non-pro across the line. Kirk was not far behind in the mid-20′s.

Thanks,

Travis

Have you heard of Rock Racing yet?

Just in case you haven’t heard of Rock Racing yet I wanted to expose you to them. The owner of the Rock Racing is also the owner of Rock & Republic. Rock Racing is kind of the bad boy of professional cycling this year. I read an interview on them in this month’s Outside magazine and to say the least they are super interesting.

There team is stacked and has several top riders from a few years back.

I’m interested to see how the rest of their season goes.
