LAVA Magazine is a triathlon mag from Ironman

Just discovered a new triathlon magazine called LAVA. It’s created by the folks at Ironman.

It’s a high end magazine with beautiful photography and first class editorial. I’ve really enjoyed both of the issue’s that I’ve read.

Why LAVA?

This new magazine was named after the chain of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean where the first Ironman race took place. Since that inaugural race more than three decades ago, people from all over the world have descended upon Hawaii’s Kailua-Kona every year to watch the ultimate athletic feat unfold.

LAVA magazine invites you to join our journey into the fiery center of triathlon. On our pages, hot new gear, training and nutrition advice, inspiring stories, and the latest news in the sport await.

Get Serious. Get LAVA…Serious Triathlon.

Breakfast With the Champion

lance.armstrong.nutella
Outside Magazine posted a great interview with Lance Armstrong before Leadville.

Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, 37, has lately taken up in Aspen, living in a smart mod-Victorian a few blocks off the main drag. According to residents, he’s become something of a local fixture: Here he is training for this Saturday’s Leadville Trail 100 mountain-bike race with Aspen hardmen Max Taam and Len Zanni. There he is having sushi at Matsuhisha, with his girlfriend and their eight-week-old son, Max. And all the while, he Twitters—skipping press conferences altogether and releasing everything from news of his son’s birth to his rebuttal (“Hey pistolero…”) of comments made by this year’s Tour de France Winner, Alberto Contador, directly to his 1.7 million followers.

Saturday, Armstrong rematches Dave Wiens, who beat him at last year’s Leadville 100. He had an Outside editor over for breakfast to talk about Leadville, his new sponsorship deal with RadioShack, and his plans for the coming year.

I really love Newton Running shoes, wish I could run in them

These shoes are not a gimmick. They perform as describe. I actually miss running in them, still no recover from my plantar fasciitis. I rode after work tonight, it took 15 minutes to get prepared, when you run after work, you step out of your car ready to go. I miss that “easy” feeling. I’m a huge fan of these shoes.

Fartlek

Coach Felipe from Breakaway Training just sent me over my first 4 week plan. Holy crap I’m pumped, this is my chance to not be fat anymore and maybe be better than Bryan Cass at something! I wasn’t planning on getting up early tomorrow to train but my plan calls for a 90 minute high cadence ride and a 30 minute run. I have to get it all in before work, 6 am, here I come.

While browsing my plan I came across the word “Farklek”. If I was still in junior high (or Dave’s mind) this would still be a fun word. Google is amazing….

Fartlek, which means “speed play” in Swedish, is a form of conditioning which puts stress mainly on the aerobic energy system due to the continuous nature of the exercise. The difference between this type of training and continuous training is that the intensity or speed of the exercise varies, meaning that aerobic and anaerobic systems can be put under stress. Most fartlek sessions last a minimum of 45 minutes and can vary from aerobic walking to anaerobic sprinting. Fartlek training is generally associated with running, but can include almost any kind of exercise.
